mukhang wala pang thread for vancouver tsikoteers

just migrated lang dito sa vancity recently(10 months), sa East Broadway location ko and I am from Olongapo back home. Actually ako rin nag-start nung olongapo, zambales, bataan tsikoteers thread.

i think GasJunkie ay taga-rito rin from Renfrew Hts.

sa mga tsikoteers who were planning or want to migrate here in Canada, maybe i could share some of my experience.

well dumating kami October (Fall), so malamig.........mga one week kami sinisipon but okey na rin pagtagal tagal.

my first few months, mahirap din lalo na sa trabaho kasi dyan sa atin paupo upo lang unlike dito you have to earn every cents ng pinagpapawisan. i'd say, di naman kami nahirapan kasi marami umalalay sa amin (relatives) but may mga iba akong na-meet na nahirapan din.

hi oic65, mas madali bang mag migrate diyan kung dito sa US manggagaling. balita ko mas madali dw maging permanent res diyan kaysa dito sa US.

well, expect yung former trabaho mo dyan sa atin eh hindi mo ma-get here kaagad. dito, your experience and education back home are not considered that is why some have to go back to college and do upgrade.

ang taxes dito napakalaki....6% sa federal at 7% sa provincial, so kung may bibilhin kang goods...add another 13% on top of that.

apartment/basement houses with two bedrooms ranges from $750 to $1000, yan eh based sa prices nung naghahanap ako ng malilipatan (nakituloy ako sa pinsan ko).

whatelse? weather is nice compared sa ibang province ng Canada where it could go to both extremes..sobra init or sobrang lamig.

Yung citizenship pwede mo applyan after 3 years yata na pagiging permanent resident mo.

Di ko lang alam kung mas mabilis ang processing kung sa US ka galing.

yup, NHL season lapit na......i was so disappointed with the Canucks last season, they din't make the playoff. buti pa Vancouver Giants sa WHL.

im a bit surprised to learn that Canadian are real big hockey fans.....they talk about it sa work, resto, coffee shops, in the bus, basically everywhere. Back home kasi puro basketball........ngayon medyo na-appreciate ko na hockey, my son and I even watch one game ng Canucks sa GM place.

Owning a car in Canada is expensive. You have to add 13% sales tax on top of the purchase price. Insurance is also a killer. You are required to get your basic insurance from the govt (this is for BC, don't know about other provinces). Its called ICBC. If you will go for comprehensive insurance, you can get it from icbc or from private insurance. From my experience difference is not big, around $50 only.

One way to save on insurance is to get your Philippine insurance companies to write a letter to ICBC informing them how long you have been insured without any claims. The longer the better. If I remember correctly, if you have over 8 years without claims, you can get as much as 40% discount. Its best to bring this with you before you go to Canada.

Another way of saving although NOT RECOMMENDED as it is illegal, is to lower the invoice amount. Say you buy a car for $10,000 just declare that you bought it for $8000. You pay tax on 8000 not 10000, you can only insure the car for 8000. So incase of loss you will be compensated for 8000 only.

When buying a car, the seller is required by law to inform you if the car has been stolen, recovered, rebuilt, out of province and had a claim of over $2000. If you buy from reputable dealers they will comply with this. You can also check by getting the VIN number and going to www.icbc.com. You have to pay around $21 for the vin check.

Gas is over a dollar a liter. Every 2 years you are required to go for aircare before you renew your insurance. Forgot how much. Shops charge by the hour for labor.
