NISSAN Motor Philippines Inc. announced Friday it was recalling 4,070 of its X-Trail sport utility vehicle as part of the global recall of 475,400 units.
Leman Lee, company president and chief executive, said the voluntary recall was related to the fuel inlet to the gasoline tank, called the fuel filler tube, which may rust at the tube-mounting bracket.
A pinhole may result from the rust formation, which can cause a fuel leak during full refueling, Lee said.
He said developing a hole from rusting would take 10-15 years, depending on humidity and other factors.
"In short, there is no real cause for panic over the short term," he said. "However, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. has decided to take a very proactive stand toward the issue by making a recall this early."
The worldwide recall affects markets in Japan, Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia/Oceania, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Thailand.
In the Philippines, the recall will affect more than half of the 6,400 X-Trail units sold since the vehicle was introduced in July 2003.
Being recalled are units made between July 2003 and November 2004.
Senior manager Raymond Tribdino said the company assembles completely knocked down kits of X-Trails from Japan, usually a month before delivery to buyers.
He said the recall was expected to slash X-Trail sales -- the company's bestseller -- as the public becomes wary at first, before judging for themselves on the basis of available information.
"Buyers would realize the impact of such a recall and soon sales will be restored to pre-recall levels," Tribdino said.
"The cost of this campaign will run into the millions of pesos, but that is something that Nissan is willing to shoulder completely for the peace of mind of our X-Trail buyers," he said. With INQ7.net
