Guys, got a problem am hoping somebody can help me with. During cold starts, it takes two clicks to get my safari's engine starting. The first click, engine cranks but doesn't catch on. Battery is strong. Had my glow plugs checked at speedy's but all were found ok. Had my electricals checked at Rey's, they couldn't find anything wrong. Finally I just decided to have my plugs all changed. Unfortunately, it didn't help. So I went back to rey's and they said that I had to have my heater (glow plug) sensor changed. This is the tiny socket-type thing plugged into the assembly where the thermostat is. It's supposed to sense the temp of the plugs so that the processor (green elect box) can determine the length of time the plugs needs heating. If the heat sensor is detached, heating action takes around 10 seconds whether hot or cold and gets the engine starting at just one click always. If it's attached: cold takes just around 3 seconds which is not enough to start engine at one click (takes 2 clicks always), hot takes just one click and the heating takes less than 2 sec or none at all if still very hot. It's quite difficult to find this piece (sensor) and would like opinions before I spend on it. Thanks guys.

first, make sure the sensor is the culprit. with a lot of JDM safari around i'm sure that sensor would turn up in one of those surplus shops. if a new sensor doesn't change the symtoms try an engine compression test.

By the way the "sensor" I was talking about is the temperature sending unit. Afrasay what is the engine compression test for? I just had a total overhaul done last december because I had the vehicle repainted including the engine (sinabay na). Injectors have been cleaned, all filters are new. Vehicle has reached the 1000km mark for break-in.

How much is the said sensor?

If it's fairly low priced then maybe it's okay to change it agad. Another option is, if the part is easy to remove and swap then you can try getting one from another unit which starts ok then test it on your ride.

Or you could just do what I used to do.

    1. Put ingition in ON position until light turns green
    2. Then quickly cycle back to LOCK position then to ON position
    3. Repeat cycle three times before starting engine

At least ito walang gastos. Wala namang nasira during the few years I used to do this. Pajero nga lang yung rig. But it may work on yours as well.

Otep, I also thought about that method last night and am planning to do it later.

Glennster, buti ka pa small things like that don't bother you. Makes your life easier and more stress-free. Hehe. I got a ton of other "small things" in my safari that's driving me nuts.

Vinj, the temp sending unit costs 1,700 buckeroos. Also am worried that when I purchase this, it might not totally solve the problem at all, although the testing done at Rey's initially points to this item as the culprit.

    scepter,
I had that problem w/ my 95 TD42 safari, in line type, before. Aside from changing the glow plugs, try checking your alternator also. I had mine replaced with a surplus alternator but with higher wattage (or is it voltage?).

Oknamlarry, what's the stock ampere rating of your TD42- if you can remember? And what's the rating of the new alternator you got? Finally did changing the plugs solved your problem or it didn't, that's why you had the alternator changed also? Mine is a 94 safari (TD42) which I had overhauled last dec. Before that, it always started at 1 very fast click, never had problems. After the overhaul and 2 months painting, it only started at 1 click if hot. Otherwise, always took two.

tanong lang mga bro, pag lumamig makina ng safari ko at pag nag start ako in a few second parang gusto nyang mamatay, kaya gawa ko, choke ko muna, ganun na lang lagi lalo na sa umaga, kahit mataas na ang temp. pag binaba ko na ang trottle knob, kakalog uli at mamamatay, kaya gawa ko ngayon 1300rpm in 5 minutes, after 5mins pino na idling nya, may heater ba na kinakabit dito tulad ng starex pag start alis na agad? just nid help or suggestions from someone expert sa TD42, maraming salamat poh

i have the same problem with my td42 as you guys. ang ginawa ko since naka battery islolator ako from by previous sound setup was pinatangal ko po un at balik normal wiring from alt to bat tapos pinacheck ko ung fuel hose from the filter to injection kc medyo lose at umaatras ang fuel kapag naka standby ng medyo matagal at kailangan mo pa ibumba. it solved the problem. kailangan lang ng malakas na batt power at air tight fuel line.
by the way, 110 amps alt gamit ko.

might not be related but did anyone of you bother to change the oil that lubricates the injection pump (inline)diaphragm according to the maintenance sched? use BOSCH OL36V1 or Cod liver oil (available sa Mercury Drug in capsule form). Three to four drops lang. Before i change this nga ha hunt ng rev yun engine. try ninyo mura lang naman ang COD liver oil capsule. Also be sure na bleed yun fuel system of air.
