The O2 sensor or oxygen sensor is generally located along the exhaust manifold or exhaust piping of the engine. It looks somewhat like a sparkplug with one or more leads (wrapped in a black heat resistant wire wrapping) connecting it to the car's electronics.

The purpose of the oxygen sensor is to give the car's ECU a feedback on the quality of the burn inside the engine's cylinders. This helps the engine self-adjust for the better efficiency, power and reduced emissions.

The sensor does wear out or it can get contaminated if leaded gasoline was used even just once. When that happens, it will need to be replaced.
