Just saw this news item (CNA Singapore): Nissan to recall 2.5M cars worldwide, that were sold between 1999-2002. This includes Sunny (Exalta ba ito?) and the SUV X-Trail.

Reason? Meron daw "sensor" na if not replaced, this will cause the engine to stall. Here in Singapore, Nissan is going to replace this, without cost.

Buti na lang, hindi Nissan ride ko.

Funny THing, my 2001 Sentra LS won't start, the casa say crankshaft sensor. Subject pa raw yun warranty. Before that the car would stall in the middle of the road, is this it?

Not a biggie but for future headaches ng NISSAN ay the early na maayos ito the better .

    FYI:

Japan's Nissan Motor Co. will only recall defective passenger cars from the worldwide market and not light commercial vehicles.

Universal Motors Corp. yesterday made the clarification after broadcast media reports warned owners of all Nissan vehicles made between 1988 and May 2003 to have their units checked for possible engine defect.

Universal Motors Vice-President Elizabeth Lee said light commercial vehicles are not affected by the recall and assured customers that their vehicles are safe.

The company is the local distributor of the Nissan Frontier, Urvan, Terrano and Patrol.

"Based on the information we gathered from Nissan Japan, the engines affected are those used in passenger cars and on passenger cars-based. The engines used for Nissan light commercial vehicles are not the same engines used for passenger cars," Ms. Lee said.

Passenger cars are sold in the Philippines by Nissan Motor's subsidiary, Nissan Motors Philippines, Inc. Ms. Lee said the Japan head office informed the local distributor that malfunction of rotating sensor in at least five engine types is the main cause for the recall.

Hitachi Unisia Automotive supplied the defective part.

On Thursday, Japan's third largest automaker said it would recall 1.02 million cars worldwide at an estimated cost of $138 million-$148 million.

Reports said the recall will affect passenger cars including Sunny, March Cube, Primera, Presage, X-Trail, Skyline and Fairlady Z as well as two cars built for Subaru-maker Fuji Heavy Industries and Mazda Motor Corp. on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis.

The recall, covering 25 models, is the second biggest ever by a Japanese automaker. The biggest was in 1996 which also involved Nissan and about 1.05 million units.

Nissan said the cars to be recalled were mostly sold in Japan, US, Europe and other smaller markets.

"Since Universal Motors Corp. does not handle the Nissan passenger cars in the market, Nissan Philippines would be in a better position to answer questions regarding the products they distribute [and what cars types will be affected]," Ms. Lee said.

    good news for local nissans:

Local Nissan vehicles spared from global recall
Local assemblers of Nissan Motor Co., Japan's third largest automaker, assured the public yesterday that their vehicles were not covered by a global recall order on over one million Nissan cars worldwide.

In a statement, Nissan Motor Philippines, Inc. said its passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were not included in the recall announcement made by Japan's Ministry of Land Transportation.

Universal Motors Corp., the authorized assembler and distributor of Nissan light commercial and recreational vehicles in the country also said its Frontier, Patrol, Terrano and Urvan Estate were not included in the recall order.

Nissan Motor Co. has been ordered to recall some 25 vehicle models worldwide due to a defective sensor that could lead engines to short-circuit and stall.

But Nissan Motor Philippines, Inc. said the recall order affected only certain Nissan models in Japan and other markets.

"All variants of the Nissan X-Trail, Cefiro, Sentra GX, Verita and Serena are not included in the recent recall announcement," it added.

News reports from Tokyo said the recall order covered 1.02 million cars worldwide, but Nissan Philippines said it affected only about 300,000 units in the global market that included Southeast Asia, Australia, South Africa, Latin America and the Carribean.

Nissan Philippines also clarified that the recall order covered models made between 1998 and 2002 only. "We are certain that the current production of the Sentra is definitely not affected by the parts issue as confirmed with Nissan Motor Limited," the press release quoted Leman Lee, president and chief executive officer of Nissan Motor Philippines, Inc., as saying.

There have been no reports of accidents caused by the defective engine sensor.

In May 1996, Nissan also recalled over 1.05 million cars worldwide.

Both Nissan Philippines and Universal Motors have yet to determine whether the recall order would affect local sales. Nissan Japan had said the recall would cost an estimated $138 million to $148 million. -- I. C. C. Gonzales

ang mga nissan models ng pilipinas na kasama sa recall ay mga exalta 1.5 & 1.6 with the N16 platform.

just wait for further announcements from Nissan Motor Phil.

only cars with specific production numbers are covered in the recall, most of which are units released from may 2001 up to the first half of 2002.
