Can someone verify what refrigerant the 89 maxima should use, R12 or 134a? what happens if you charge it with the wrong refrigerant?

    TIA

your car is an 89. the i.m.a.c.a. (international mobile air conditioning association) made r134a mandatory for all cars produced from 1995 and up. your car originally had r12. the telltale signs for r12 system is that the receiver/dryer will have a sight glass, has smaller screw-on type service fittings being the discharge side has a smaller fitting than the suction side. the r134a system however, may or may not have a sight glass and the service fittings are quick disconnect type, the suction side smaller than the discharge side contrary to the r12 systems. but there are shops in manila which do not follow regulations if they retrofit r12 systems to r134a. it takes a refrigerant identifier. be careful in topping off or recharging as the compressor will self destruct if there is contamination between refrigerants.

i believe I already made the mistake of topping it with 134a.

Since the car is suppose to use R12, and I made the mistake of having it charged with 134a, is that the reason why it doesn't get cold?

and will it be ok to release the 134a gas, just by pressing on the gas valve, while all mechs seems to be still working?

have it serviced, and have it retrofitted to r134a, change the expansion valve, compressor oil to polyalkyl glycol (PAG), change the o-rings to hbnr green o-rings, change the receiver/dryer and add the retrofit service fittings. make sure the technician places a retrofit sticker
