When you do not want the transmission constantly 'hunting' between gears.

E.g. towing uphill, going downhill especially on traction-compromised surfaces (sand, loose gravel, etc.)

read sa manual the hold button is used only when the gear lever is stuck. Lets say in park when you press the button on the side and it wont move you press the hold button to release the locking mechanism to move to R or D

HOLD will tell your a/t to upshift as soon as possible, so that you do not rev too much.

please try to do a search, this has been answered na in the past.

Nope. Standard configuration is still the most economical. Just keep the O/D on so that you can utilize fourth gear. With O/D off, hanggang 3rd gear ka lang.

    pasingit lang

my gen2 A/T JDM pajero doesnt have a hold button... anyway cruising at highway, only till it reaches 65kph does it upshift to fourth, now dos this mean that if i can activate the hold button, i would upshift to fourth gear earlier than 65kph???

    tia!

This switch, adjacent to the automatic shift lever, allows the driver to choose the gear range as appropriate.

There are three positions, POWER, AUTO and HOLD.

POWER: when switched on, the POWER light will show on the dash. In normal driving, with the shift lever in D, the power mode will operate through the full range of gears 1 to 3 plus overdrive when active. In 2, the power mode will only operate through 1 to 2, and in L, the power mode will only operate on the first gear.

AUTO: In auto mode, the transmission will automatically change between POWER and ECONOMY modes as driving conditions define, changing to POWER mode for example when starting a hill ascent.

HOLD: The HOLD light will show on the dash. The transmission will operate in ECONOMY mode through the full range of selected gears, not changing any higher than the selected gear, for example if you have selected L, the transmission will not change up to 2 or higher.
