I don't know if it just me, but I don't feel the 350 newt of torque ni Monty at 1800 rpm or is it just the turbo lag? parang dapat nasa >2200 rpm to get a decent acceleration, yung napapangiti ako pag double downshift bigla palo>3K rpm den apak sa gas, may Kasama nga LNG smoke screen initially, sometimes ;)

This is what I do not understand with Toyota....

Why stick with 4 A/T, when you can go 5 A/T or better ?

hindi ba well distributed ang gear ratio sa 4 A/T ng Fort?

Non-VGT Montero lang ang katapat ng bagong Fortuner eh.

Iwan parin yan ng GLS-V kahit VNT equiped na ang Fort.

I think they call it VARIABLE Nozzle Turbo - sounds so much like the VARIABLE-GEOMETRY TURBO (V-GT) installed in the new Monteros.
Reading thru the specs, though, the Fortuner 3.0L diesel variant "only" churns out 163/3400 ps/rpm of horses & 343Nm/1400-3200rpm of pull & compared against the Montero 2.5L V-GT diesel engine. it pales, relatively, in output on both counts (175/4000 ps/rpm & torque of 350Nm/1800-3500rpm).
Is this really a new turbo tech similar to V-GT? If yes, how come it generates lesser output even with a higher engine displacement?
(I am not familiar with the numbers of the previous 3.0L turbo-diesel engine of the Fortuner.)
Both are not equipped with variable valve timing so makers has to choose kung low-speed&high-load performance OR high-speed&part-load performance.

    Lets compare their valve timing:

    4D56 DI-D
    Intake Opens * 20deg BTDC
    Intake Closes * 40deg ABDC
    Exhaust Opens * 38deg BBDC
    Exhaust Closes * 22deg ABDC

1KD-FTV (paki-correct na lang po at sabi-sabi lang to never seen the pdf technical info)
    Intake Opens * 2deg BTDC
    Intake Closes * 37deg ABDC
    Exhaust Opens * 45deg BBDC
    Exhaust Closes * 0deg ABDC

The 4D56 DI-D has an Overlap of 42.00 degrees and has an Intake Duration of 240.00 degrees. The Exhaust Duration is 240.00 degrees. Meaning kahit maliit ang lungs nya (2.5 liters lang) eh maluwag naman ang lagusan nya ng hangin kaya nakakasustain kahit sa high rpm (mabilisan na takbo).

The 1KD-FTV has an Overlap of 2.00 degrees and has in Intake Duration of 218.00 degrees. The Exhaust Duration is 225.00 degrees. Meaning malaki nga lungs nya (3.0 liters) pero ang duration ng valve events eh hindi kasing tagal ng 4d56 DI-D.

If you're Toyota, why upgrade every aspect when you'd still be selling in droves despite the older tech? It's a welcome add-on, the IC and VNT on the 2.5L and IMO enough to keep the Fort selling as it does.
