Soft, safe, and simple: Mitsubishi previews upcoming all-new 2013 Outlander at 4th PIMS
Words by Leslie Sy | Photos by Christopher Kho

A lot of things happened in 2003. Iraq fell to US forces, SARS epidemic spread worldwide, the supersonic passenger airplane Concorde had its last commercial flight, Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected as governor of California, and the very first generation Mitsubishi Outlander came to life as a compact crossover SUV.

Loosely based on the Lancer, it was configured to seat five or seven passengers and powered with a 160 hp 2.4L engine normally found in the Galant. Moving forward, the Outlander was boldly restyled in 2007, given a more powerful 200 hp 3.0L V6 but lost two seats. So what does the 3rd generation 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander have to offer?

    Nope... 1st gen was a 5+2 seater.

Nope, the 2nd gen was the 5+2 seater in most markets. Neither 1st nor 2nd gen had 3rd row for the local market, though.

and it (the 1st gen) was not offered in most markets with the Galant's 4G69 producing 160hp, it used the 4G64 shared with the local Space Gear with only 136hp, even in US.

One thing for sure... the 2ng gen Outlander does not have the 3rd row seating so the 3rd gen Outlander should benefit from this feature. I just don't know if most buyers will fine the 2.0L gas engine to be sufficient.

Some markets had 5+2 seating. Philippines models had only 5-seater.

The all-new Outlander displayed on the PIMS has a 5+2 seater configuration. looks cramped on the rear.

    Big change, huh.

Sana lang talaga below 2M. Okay yan kalaban ng Tucson Premium. V6 pa naman yan, 200hp pa. Wow!

If anyone's wonderin' what the rear looks like... Eto.

Nope. This Outlander has the most cramped 3rd row I've ever been in. With the 2nd row in its default position, I couldn't fit in the 3rd row. Had to move it forward just so I could have my feet planted, though my knees were still rubbing against the 2nd row seats.

I thought the 2nd gen CR-V had the worst 3rd row ever, I was wrong.

nope... or at least the local 2013 model will not have a diesel variant. Abroad, it has a diesel version with the same HP rating.

Others have already applied variable valve opening with SOHC. Variable timing is possible, too. The difficulty is making it independent for both intake and exhaust when using a single shaft.
