I’ve just spent an engaging half-hour in the company of Gayu Eusegi, Mitsubishi’s global product director.

Mostly we talked about the new Global Small Concept, which will be built in Thailand and sized somewhere between a Toyota Aygo and the Colt supermini. It’ll go on UK sale in 2012, effectively replacing the Colt in the line-up.

But also he told me some news, which seemed to surprise a few Mitsubishi Europe bods as much as it did me.

The LancerEvolution X, Eusegi told me, will be the last Evo. “There is still a demand [for the car],” he said, “but we must stop.” Eyebrow up.

“Our influence now is EV technology,” Eusegi said, adding that the decision was a “policy change”.

It seems Mitsubishi, which is going to introduce eight full electric or hybrid cars by 2015, has decided its image is about lowering CO2, not making lurid replicas of rally cars that don’t go top-level rallying any more.

Eusegi said that customers would find it “easier to understand” what Mitsubishi was about if it was no longer in this motorsport-inspired market.

He seemed to put the rumoured diesel hybrid Evo replacement to bed, too. So the X will be the last Evolution model? “Yes. Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles,” said Eusegi. “Maybe then we can enter the market again.”

Until then, prepare yourselves for the end of an era.

Look on the bright side na lang tayo sir, that at least they (mitsu) does want to race electric (or hybrid) vehicles in the future. That is not far fetched afterall.

But the Evo X will surely be priceless and its value later on appreciate IMO.

Well time to move on... This company is bleeding money and its rally days are over. Rallying and joining motorsports in general is a luxury and those can only be afforded to money making car companies as a marketing tool...

as long as they kept the OEM parts and the mods they put are bolt on only, i guess that would be ok.

My favorite cars. For me they are the best i'll choose an evo over a lambo anytime IMHO the car just had soul its own soul. As an abid fan I tought there will be a next evo. Especially the last evo has a different engine than the latter evo's and as some tuners say the engine got potential. So goodbye evo.

Or pwede rin na rallying and motorsports especially the WRC will soon come to an end sa kakulangan ng support from car manufacturers.

Ilang "manufacturer teams" na lang ba ngayon supporting the WRC? Ford, Citroen, Mini... meron pa ba iba?

UPDATE: Mitsubishi's Lancer Evo is not dead after all

There's the statement from Tokyo: "Production of the current Lancer Evolution continues as planned. As for its successor, regulations and market feedback will dictate its engineering package and architecture.

MMC has kept the Lancer Evolution evolving itself as the most performing model in the global market. However, as the needs and demands change, MMC is considering not to keep the Lancer Evolution evolve in the way as before, but to find the different direction to evolve. The new direction and corresponding products will be disclosed in due course."
    "Mitsubishi Evo X Update
Yesterday's announcement that the Mitsubishi Evo X might be the last one of its kind started a media frenzy. This made the Japanese manufacturer release a statement to clarify the matter. The X is going to be the last Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in this form, meaning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Apparently, the Evolution franchise will continue to live, but a hybrid powertrain instead.

Mitsubishi Motor Corporation release a letter that says the Mitsubishi Evo name will continue to be in the company's line-up even after 2013, when the current version will go out of production. However, the company feels it has to adapt to changing market conditions, which will determine it head towards greener engine "

    up for a good news.
    http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2...direction.html
Reports of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo’s death have been greatly exaggerated. After the unsurprisingly angry backlash the company received from its fanbase, Mitsubishi has apparently reversed its decision to kill its flagship rally fighter.
Mitsubishi now must find a way to balance the ferocious performance and cult-status image of the Evolution with the new eco-friendly image it’s developing around the world. The Evo X will still be available, but the next generation will “evolve” into a different direction—something that may surprise the Evo’s thousands of fans.
In a press release, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Global Chief Executive, Osamu Masuko indicates that perhaps the Evo never was axed and that the automaker has plans for the next generation of the vehicle. Masuko comments that in response to new market demands the automaker, “is considering not advancing the Lancer Evolution concept in the same way as before, but to find a different direction for the Lancer Evolution model to evolve.”
With previous rumors that the car could include hybrid or electric technology, this seems all the more likely by additional remarks that the car’s future direction and the “technologies involved” in it, will be revealed at a later date.
So rest assured Evo faithful, the STi-killer isn’t dead, but it may never be the same.

Mitsubishi is planning a radical overhaul of its Lancer Evolution by changing the next incarnation into a diesel hybrid. The switch of drivetrain is designed to save the Evo from tightening economy and emissions regs while preserving its trademark mid-range shove.

Mitsubishi is said to have given serious consideration to axing the Evo model altogether. As recently as a month ago, sources in Japan said an earlier project — to switch the car to a petrol hybrid powertrain and base it on the PX-MiEV SUV concept’s platform — was dead.

But now the firm’s R&D department has been given approval to push the car in a different direction: a diesel hybrid.
Engineers hope that the mix of clean-diesel torque and electric motor assistance will allow the Evo XI to deliver a 0-62mph time of under five seconds, yet cut CO2 emissions to well under 200g/km.

Handling will be entrusted to a revised version of the Evo’s highly rated four-wheeldrive system, S-AWC, which integrates steering, braking and traction control.

The switch marks a big gamble for Mitsubishi. Diesel hybrid will, in effect, rule the Evo out of competition use and could limit its appeal in key markets such as the US and Japan, where diesels have yet to gain widespread acceptance.
