    Mitsubishi to sell a sub-1 million peso Montero Sport?
    The most affordable Montero yet

    According to a source in the Mitsubishi Motors Philippines camp, the company is working to bring in the most affordable variant of their best selling SUV, the Montero Sport.

    If it pushes through next year, the new variant will be the most affordable vehicle in its class, as it is set to be priced at the PhP 1 million mark... or possibly even slightly less than that. To put that in perspective, most top of the line compact family cars are priced at this level.

    Expect the new base model to come with a non-VGT diesel engine and, of course, base model features as well; though it's unlikely that it will come with manual wind up windows.

    This rumored new variant of the Montero Sport could undercut the competition by at least PhP 300 thousand, and would pose a great challenge for Mitsubishi's competitors. Couple this upcoming PhP sub-1M Montero Sport with another upcoming model, the B-segment Mirage, then its clear that Mitsubishi Motors Philippines is truly aiming for the number one spot in the years to come.

    ==========================

    Based on the article above, the "stripper" monty will have:

    the "old" 4D56 non VGT engine
    power windows

    ==========================

    Some other features that will be omitted or retained based on speculation:

    -Safety features* ie. ABS, airbags.
    *Seatbelts obviously required.

    -Painted bumpers retained

    -Body cladding omitted bec. the tires to be used will be as thin as that of a bicycle (same kind on the Strada GLX alu wheels or even the steel rims on the Strada GL are both possible).

    -Seating Material changed to all vinyl or cloth/vinyl combi.

    -5 seater as some suggested is possible to cut on cost.

    -1Din CD radio is possible.

    -Single aircon system from the front. Rear probably omitted.

    -No rear window defogger.

    - No spare tire cover plastic.

    - No Fog lamps.

    -No roof rails.

    -Black plastic side mirror, door handles, grille, etc..

    A good way to imagine what this "stripper" monty would be like is to look at the current STRADA GL.

    ==============

    Is there really a market for this kind of vehicle? If I'm not mistaken most consumers would like some kind of creature comfort in their vehicle. The majority of buyers of these "stripper" vehicles are usually for fleet use (ie. companies). Even the wang-wang crowd would use this monty to replace their innova J escort vehicle.

    I wonder if this could be a mini-Montero (like the old mini-Pajero, Kei car style)?

    No offense. Bad news for the owners, mawawala na talaga yung 'exclusivity' ng Montero. Sa ngayon palang eh, what more pag labas nito.

    personally, this is okay with me

    the more the merrier

    more source for parts and third party support although resale value might take a hit

    for me, its practicality over exclusivity

    i also doubt if gagawin itong taxi or for hire yellow vehicle

    what I've learned from a Mitsu insider, the Adventure has to be phased out & a newer Fuzion model will be introduced with a diesel powerplant, no downpriced-Monty.

    Seems like the news on downpricing Monty is not accurate.

    Meh. What exclusivity? The Montero sells so darn well that it's like the Fortuner... they're everywhere.

    I'm guessing the sub-1m Montero Sport will have the 135 hp engine found in the base Strada, a manual transmission, and a 1DIN radio. Probably 15" mags or even steelies.

    It will completely and utterly kill the Fortuner market. It might even put a dent in Innova sales and crush the Crosswind XUV. Isuzu better do something quick... like selling a sub-1m Alterra with a 4JA1 or 4JB1... come on, Isuzu, you did it with the D-Max...

    EDIT: New Fuzion? Finally? We were talking to Arlan about it last November, but he didn't comment with finality. One can only hope...

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
