Hi - bago ako dito sa Pajero forum, but been reading most of the stuff in this forum for quite sometime. I have a white 2002 Pajero myself, 4M40 (yata) engine. I love the built, the porma, and I said this is a good classic design, and am planning to keep it for a long time.

Last week I had it check by my cousin (who is a bit of a mechanic, he owns an L300 which he overhauled by himself). I left the Pajero for 3 days with himw, and I think he change the engine seal (ribber) on the top engine block - one that covers the cam..(may not be the right name) because it is leaking already.

Anyway, one of the main finding, he mentioned, is the excessive 'blow by' which he showed. He opened the cover where the oil is being poured and true enough oil and gas is spurting out of the opening. He is siggesting a top overhaul.

I was of course saddend by this finding, I thought the engine was fairly new (about 56 T km lang). I dont have any problem on power, malakas parin, wala usok sa tambutso, I dont add oil in between oil changes. Is this a sign of some trouble - loose piston rings,

How do I know if the 'blow by' is excessive ?

Whats the experience of other member regarding this 'blow by'? Can you check this 'problem' in your own Pajero and feedback to the forum on their observation.

Any good shop (other than the casa) who can diagnose this problem.

I thought I needed this forums advise on how will I proceed to correct this problem. Appreciate your adise. Thanks in advance

hi jlo, ganyan din problem ko dati, nung pagbukas ko ng oil cap, tumatalsik ang oil, nagbasa basa rin ako about blow by, it just so happens that my uncle also bought a bnew pajero. nung pagbukas ko ng cap niya tumatalsik din ang oil. so i ruled out blow by. meron pa ibang symptoms na nabasa ko sa previous threads. like yung kumakain ng oil, smoke coming out the oil dipstick, loss of power and high diesel consumption. so far wala naman yung akin, and consumption ko is still 6.8 kms/liter. check mo kung meron ka sa mga symptoms na yan. 99 model pajero ko with 89k on the odometer. if yes baka kailangan nga. but ang baba pa milage mo bro.

Even brand new cars can leak oil on the valve cover gasket. It's nothing to get 'sad' about. Having a leaky valve cover gasket alone is not enough to come up with a diagnosis of 'blow by'.

Even the old wives' technique of opening the oil cap is not a sure fire way to test for blow by. Sure oil will spurt of the engine is blow by BUT oil can also spurt even if the engine is not.

The only sure fire way to test if an engine is blow by or not is to do a compression test. An overhaul is not a joke, so make sure the diagnosis is right before tearing a part what could be a perfectly good engine in the first place.

AFAIK, Betan Calibration and Central Diesel have compression testing services. Try calling other shops in your area.

Guys - thanks for this advise, very reassuring.. Well medyo kampante na ako. Its my favorite car actually, you dont spend weekends without spending few minutes under the hood - kahit punas punsa lang. For the past few weeks, bagal nga ng takbo, kako bago lalo masira dahil sa 'blow by'. Anyway will drive it normal na.

But just to answer.. kumakain ng oil, smoke coming out the oil dipstick, loss of power and high diesel consumption.. no symptoms of those (yet). In fact am getting a good mileage, 7.5 km per liter.

And I'll try the compression tests just to clear things - thanks for that.

The other finding that was mentioned (just recall it now) is the fact there are signs of oil in the intercooler, the one on top of the engine. Not sure if this is normal.. if you trace the pipes, it could be coming out of the turbo assembly or doon sa tube coming from the valve cover.

Is the sign of oil in the intercooler mean some trouble, or a normal phenom that should be dealt with - clean from time to time ?

Sir sharing lang, naexperirence ko na rin yang leak na yan at may tumatalsik na oil kapag binuksan. normal lang daw yan gawa ng valve. about sa valve cover leakage madali lang yan ipaayos m olang pagnagpatune up ka ulit. as long as walang problema sa oil consumption, usok at power i think its nothing to worry. monitor mo lang palagi oil mo, pwedeng nababawasan sa kakagamit but not up to the point na magdadagdag ka ng half liter every other day. maglagay ka na lang ng additional gasket sa oil cap mo para maiwasan yung pagbabasa ng oil sa valve cover mo malapit sa lalagyan ng oil.

    hope it help u...
