So what is the possible explanation for the forward and reverse? I thought it was just a SUA going forward but the driver kept on repeating it going back and forth.

According to a police report, the suspect was reversing the Fortuner outside the bank when he bumped into a parked vehicle behind him.

He then tried to stop and move forward. But instead of stepping on the brake pedal, he pressed his foot on the accelerator, suddenly propelling the Fortuner straight into the bank.

He lunged forward and reverse a couple more times after hitting the bank counter the first time. It seemed to look like he tried to shift to Neutral, overshot it and selected Reverse, then tried to correct it but overshot again and selected Drive.... all this time with one foot on the gas.

He was confused, panicked, and potentially DUI/DWI.

He suddenly got amnesia and forgot to pull his foot away from the gas pedal? so stupid. I understand some mistakenly depress the gas pedal thinking it was the brake pedal but this one is a totally different scenario.

    in my opinion,
he kept panicking and stepping on the wrong pedal and shifting to the wrong slot?

    i don't know,
can you put it in reverse without stepping on the break pedal?
and can you shift it out of reverse, without stepping on the break pedal?

If from P, you need to step on the pedal and press the shift knob to change gears. From reverse naman to other gear, just need to press the shift knob. That's how our Honda behaves tho, not sure for others. 57 na rin pala yung driver.

I believe that model Fortuner uses a gated shifter. No brake interlock between R and N.

You just need to depress the brake pedal to get out of Park.

    malay natin...
mebbe the spare tyre is in the seat behind the driver...

    according to google,
the jimny's stock tyre carrier may not accomodate upsized wheels.
but upsized tyre carriers are available in the market, naman daw.

Maybe it's time to open new thread dedicated to SUA from any cars.
    Baka bibo ulit yung thread.
Also, that would help us determine ilang vehicles on that brand/model experienced the SUA.

All the more so then, because the stupidity was intentional. Alam na nga ng owner that the new wheels won't fit the rear spare tire carrier, sige pa rin.
You spend 40-60k on a set of four oversize tires (wala pa magwheels sa cost na yan) just to end up completely immobilized when you get a flat.

Furthermore, as a 4wd vehicle, the Jimny can't be towed by conventional means without risking damage to the drive train. Flat bed carrier pa kailangan.

Oh, its an SUA alright, where the "S" stands for "stupid"
Nawalan ng preno kuno, but its simply driver error at stepping on the gas instead of the brake.

    in my view,
if the spare tyre is in the cabin, behind the driver, and he has a complete set of replace-the-tyre tools, that absolves him of this sin.

    but i wonder,
i do not recall any LTO renewal of mine, where they checked my spare tyre's presence.
yes, they checked the EWD, but the spare tyre...?

    heh heh.

    OT.
