it consumes 4.5 liters of oil.
I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Galant A/T. Is it normal to reach 2,500rpm to 3,000rpm when running at 80kph? Do I need to adjust anything?
Salamat!
hi to all galant lovers,
TIA
Brothers, my gf's galant was checked * a casa sumwhere in the metro a couple weeks ago. Minding my own business, did not asking her about anything re the car but this afternoon she told me that the bill will amount to 80k. Is this reasonable given that no tranny replacements were made, nothing major? I will try to know more about it 2m and will post soon as. Thanks 4 ur inputs. Hav a good one.
so what happened to ur GF's Galant? Very mind boggling yung 80k! Ako kasi last time sa CASA (in Laguna) 30k nagastos ko! Timing Belt, and rear Brake Pads ang inayos noon. Ayoko na nga sa CASA, unless TIMING Belt kasi sensitive daw pag belt ang papalitan, so better leave it to the experts and not just your ordinary DIY Mechanics.
Hi mga boss.. question lang, kotse ko po is a 2nd hand mitsubishi galant v6 94 model po.. bigla nalang po ako may narinig na nacreeaaking noise kapag nag steer ako, then pag tingin ko sa ilalim may tumutulo.. ive checked the power steering fluid and i think paubos na sya hindi ko alam kung dahil dun sa leak, pero nag assume ako na sa power steering na nga ang problema.. pa advise naman po kung ano ang posible problem neto and kung how much yung estimated cost ng mga repairs.. please help, im a 1st time car owner.. thanks po!!! pa advise nalang po kung naranasan nyo na to..:D
I have the same problem! I have a 99 Galant VR nga lang. If you have read some of my posts above, I just had my Tie-Rod and Rack-end replaced recently (including all 4 tires for my 12 yr old car). And I mentioned I hear a creaking sound also whenever I steer. After a week it became worse (the creaking sound). And when I checked the Power Steering reservoir, to my surprise it was empty! It hasn't done so before. So I the only rational thing to do is buy a fluid (I bought a Valvoline DEX/MERC ATF fluid). So the creaking sound disappeared...for awhile.
After a few weeks, it came back! And checked the reservoir and it's empty again! Now I know I have a problem. Prior to all of this I forgot to tell you. There are times that my belts are squealing! Specially in the morning during cold start. It seems to be eminating from my TIMING BELTS! But that's impossible since I just had my timing belts changed last 2008...sa CASA pa in San Pablo (see my previous posts here also) and it won't be due for the next 10 years pa! I checked and notcied this one hose which is kinda oily, and after much investigation I have theorized that it was the fault why my belts are screaming! Since the fluid leak is coming from that hose is leaking to my belts! Thus creating the unusual sound! I asked my father-in-law who has a knack for this things, told me it may be from the power-steering hose. And now with all that's been happening I'm thinking the old man is right. The puzzle is pieced together perfectly.
Fast-forward to yesterday (11-12-11, Saturday). I had it checked on my last Tire shop (SMS TYRES). Since I had my tie-rod and rack-end replaced there, might as well get a discount and it may also has something to do with their last repair there since the power steering may also be connected to their last repair (I'm thinking baka nga sila may kasalanan in the first place kung bakit nauubos agad ang fluid ko). So I went there and have it checked, I told them about the leaking hose, but it seems the mechanics are telling me otherwise. Steering Kit daw need ko (a whooping P5300! OEM naman daw!) plus labor (P2000 on overhaul...what overhaul?) and a P350 hose! I was surprised, but still had my cool. My wife (being a rich girl that she is) told me it's ok to have it fixed, since they accept credit card and it will only take a day, but I'm thinking, waitaminute I just don't wanna get ripped-off that easily. Good thing I have a downloaded PDF repair manual for my Galant (I suggest you search the Internet carefully for your models as well). So I took a printed portion of it (I printed the Power Steering portion only). I asked the mechanic to point in the diagram I have printed, where exactly is the problem. A little bit surprised, he kind pointed it to the STEERING GEAR and LINKAGE portion, which is very near on my replaced TIE-ROD and RACK-END. I told them I just had this fixed on their garage and they haven't noticed this was coming!? They told me it would be a completely different job. At this time I'm thinking for a second opinion.
I went to my other garage called HIGH GRIP. This time I only pointed out the hose and nothing else! I didn't even mention the tie-rod and rack-end replacement to these guys, one did however recognized me for the Aircon Estimate I had with him earlier, and told him my father-in-law knew someone who could fix it (awkward moment really but I guessed he didn't mind). And they told me that it is indeed only the hose that needs replacing. I asked them how much it would cost. The hose would be P1,700 (which I will have it custom made to a hose expert, which is near the first Garage I have visited, this shop is also highly recommended by my pa-in-law so I have no doubts in going there). I asked for the labor...after a few lingering moments they came up with P600 (really for a hose replacement only?). Anyway it's a much better offer compared to the 7k waiting for me at SMS Tyres. So I asked the mechanics if there is still time to do it today? They can do it daw. It was 3 pm, and I have to pick up my son for his tutorial at 4pm. So I decided tomorrow (Sunday), but the mechs told me they'll be watching the Pacquiao vs.Marquez III fight (for which I was kinda disappointed on Manny on this one). Im thinking there is little time for it to be fixed so I went ahead to the hose expert and have it checked if it is do-able. The mechs are telling me they need to remove the hose so that I could have it custom made, but I told them I may have no time to have it fixed that day so I might as well have an estimate of the cost and the duration of the hose to be made.
I went to the place (ALLFLEX HYDRAULICS -a hydraulic hose service center) and a guy called Albert Pineda was in-charge. He says he can make the hose and have it replaced also. The hose would indeed cost P1,700, but his labor is only P200! Imagine the savings I could get! My wife is kinda skeptical about the guy since the shop is so little, but I took my chances. He took out the hose with a help from a mechanic next door (SERVITEK, which I have no intention of having my car checked for personal reasons). Made a replica of the hose, he even pointed out the problem...I believe it is a cracked O-ring rubber (that may as well be the cause of the leak and the only problem). And after a little less than an hour, it's fixed! Good thing I still have a spare power steering fluid, so the guy poured it while I started the engine and turned the wheel. Good thing my wife is outside sitting when she told me there's a lot of fluid gushing from beneath! I checked and indeed there was, the guy fixed it by tightening the hose at the end (the leak didn't came from where it was before btw). I asked the wife again and this time there is none. I'm guessing problem solved, but I'll wait for a few weeks to really be sure if the reservoir won't go on empty again. And I still have time to fetch my son and have my car washed up.
So there you have it. My jurisdiction is check your reservoir if it is empty and have your hoses checked first since this will be a lot cheaper. But if worst comes to worst, based on the PDF Manual I've downloaded, Possible causes of these faults can include defects in the GEAR BOX, OIL PUMP and STEERING LINKAGE. Faults in the steering wheel can include excessive play of the steering wheel, difficult steering wheel operation, noise, vibration and oil leaks etc. My father-in-law told me that power steering is not much of a porblem since all it can do is you'll have difficulty in steering aka PAWIS STEERING. But I do recommend to have it fixed soon, since it is also an integral part of your vehicle.
Sorry for the loong story, I have made this forum kinda like my personal BLOG on my Car troubles, but I hope it does help a bit on your quest in repairing yours. I just don't want to see us guys get ripped-off all the time by some scheming and theiving mechanics. Because there will always be a lot of them out there. Let's all watch our backs on this. Good night and more power to this forum!

Love the car! Hate the gas consumption!
Problems:
1. Gas -9km/ litre HIGHWAY Driving and 6km/litre CITY driving (but this is not bad for it's class! I tried turning off the A/C and it got me 8km/litre on CITY driving). But still u gotta admire the others (23km/litre ??)
2.Timing Belt, Water Pump Assembly, Brake Pads -FIXED! Sa CASA nagastos ko 38k!Aray!! Timing lang dapat paayos ko, but one problem surfaced and another...WAAAH! Anyway I have ticking sound on the A/C (look for it in YOUTUBE)...relay lang daw so they switched it to the heater...problem solved! Thanks Mitsu!
3. Kumakabig sa kanan -NOT FIXED! Sabi ng "RAPIDE" Assembly, Ball Joints etc (P21k!) Other talyers sabi TIE-ROD lang! Ano b tlg? Anyone of you guys could comment on this?
4. Digital Clock -minor problem but irritating! Nala-late and I have to reset lagi. There are fixes in some forums but it needs soldering...takot ako
5. Registration 6k lang? Bakit ako 7k!!! AAAAAGH!
But overall it's a decent car! I admire the car for it's speed and stability on quick turns. You better check out TOP GEAR's 11/04 issue na-feature sya dun as "Used Car of the Month". It's what inspred me to look for one. And finally last 9/07 I got a my very own VR!!
