    When the odometer on your vehicle hits the 75,000-mile mark, it's time to start using a different type of motor oil. If you want to keep your car, truck or SUV running smoothly for another 75,000 miles and more, switching to special motor oil now can help slow the aging process and extend the performance of your older vehicle. Here are several reasons why.
    Normal Wear and Tear
    As your engine reaches 75,000 miles and more it begins to age, which requires some additional protection. Some indicators of engine wear and tear are increased oil consumption between oil changes, an engine that is slow to start on a cold morning or runs hotter on warmer days, a decrease in throttle response and gas mileage, and minor leaks. By taking a proactive approach toward your engine's maintenance, you can help inhibit its aging process and extend the life and efficiency of your automobile.
    As a vehicle ages, and its mechanical performance decreases, a greater toll is taken on its engine's oil viscosity. The demands of an older engine break down the oil more quickly, rendering it less able to lubricate. The end result is an engine that no longer functions at its peak performance. Also, as the engine wears, oil consumption, oil leakage, or lower-cylinder compression may occur. These problems can lead to spark plug failure, excessive deposits and a loss of power.
    Further, seals become brittle, rings wear and valves may not seal as tightly. Deposits can build up on fuel injectors, valves or piston rings, so they don't operate as smoothly. Diminished ring sealing allows more than the usual amount of combustion gas to contaminate the oil. This results in more rapid oil oxidation, which causes the oil to thicken and age prematurely and may ultimately explain why your engine takes longer to turn over on cold mornings.
    Time in a Bottle
    Before you ponder any expensive or unnecessary repairs, consider that the solution may be as simple as switching to an oil made for engines with over 75,000 miles. These oils are designed to provide specialized protection for your vehicle's engine by containing anti-wear additives, seal conditioners, extra cleaning agents and friction modifiers. These elements are designed to work together to condition engine seals, prevent leaks, minimize oil consumption, provide easier cold starts, improve power output and resist thermal breakdown — all of which will help maximize the life and sustain the performance of an older engine. These oils don't evaporate as easily at normal operating temperatures so ultimately less oil is consumed. The additives in oils made for engines with over 75,000 miles increase its resistance toward thickening thereby providing easier and faster cold-starts. Cleaning agents help reduce deposit formation and prevent horsepower loss, plus special friction-reducing components help maximize fuel economy and power output.
    What if your vehicle has less than 75,000 miles? Are there any advantages to using this oil in a car with fewer miles on it? Actually, you could start earlier with these oils to prevent aging effects and to help further preserve the life of your vehicle's engine. Once you switch to an oil formulated for engines over 75,000 miles, you should continue to use it in order to get the maximum benefits. Alternating between this oil and all-climate oils won't harm your engine, but you won't get the full benefits.

    According to R.L. Polk & Co., the longest-standing curator of automotive records in the United States, consumers are keeping their vehicles longer for the first time since the mid-1990s. The median car age recorded in 2002 was 8.4 years, "the highest median age since we began tracking the statistic in 1970," said Mike Gingell, vice president of Polk's aftermarket division.
    That median age means that more cars could soon be facing many of the problems associated with higher-mileage engines — and may benefit from the use of a high-mileage oil. The specific advantages of using a high-mileage oil in your higher-mileage vehicle are:

    I recentrly bought an old Mitsubishi Galant 89, 1.8 disp, power steering, manual, 15'magz with 70 to 65% tires, bagong linis carburador bago palit, ball joint and rack end and bagong tune up, I lived in Paliparan Dasma Cavite, last week drove to cubao with my brother, sa molino nagpa gas nko 500 pesos shell super premium then ung pabalik nmin 2 na kmi(sinundo ko byenan ko) nag empty na nung nasa shell macapagal kmi, den nagpakarga uli ako ng 300 premium, tamang tama lang pagdating namin sa haus(paliparan Dasma) nag empty na uli.

    sa tantya ko mga 80kms ata ung tinakbo balikan, di ko kc matandaan ung naka register sa meter ko.pero kung tama ang computation ko cguro mga 6km/liter ata. normal po ba ito sa mga ganun kalumang sasakyan? first car ko po kc, at 2 months palang ako natuto mag drive

    ano po kaya pwede ko gawin pra bumaba ung fuel consumption ko?
    ngaun pag pumupunta kmi ng asawa ko sa sm dasma mga 7 kms away(bale 14km balikan) from our haus nagkakaraga ako ng 200 pesos shell premium (mga 3 liters mahigit) eh sakto lang balikan namin. di po ba parang masyado mataas?

    Actually its hard to say. Fuel consumption depends on traffic condition, city or highway, time of day, load, driving style, and even weather.

    One of the best way is to fill up, full tank and then set your trip meter to zero (or note down the current odometer reading). Drive your car to near empty (or at least 1/4 gas remaining) then fill up again. Note how many kilometers you racked up since your last filled up and divide by the number of liters it took to get a full tank. Do this a couple of times and that's your average FC based on multiple driving conditions.

    You also said you're a new driver. Check your driving style. Better FC depends a lot on the following:

    Avoid jackrabbit starts. Ito yung arangkadang mabilis. I'm not saying na para kang nakikipagkarera, alam ko na new drivers tend do this unintentionally. Pag na-avoid mo ito, malaki na agad ang matitipid mo, di pa gastado ang makina mo.

    Are you shifting correctly? Masyado ka ba naka-babad sa low gear? The goal is to reach the high gears as soon as possible, but at the right speed and RPM. You should also downshift properly, don't push the engine in high gear when you slowed down. Remember, staying too long in low gear and being in high gear at the wrong speed both makes the engine work harder than necessary.

    Kumusta ba ang timing mo sa pag-release ng clutch vs apak sa gas? Kung mali ang timing mo, you might be revving your engine unnecessarily.

    Are you running your car hard? Highway driving at around 80km to 100km, when and where permissible, is optimal. Anything above that pushes your engine hard and you consume more gas.

    Often overlooked is the tire pressure. Make sure you always check. Don't rely on visual inspection alone. I suggest you get a tire pressure gauge. Pag malambot ang gulong mo, mas hirap ang makina dahil may extra resistance.

    Don't drive with the windows open at high speed. You might think you're saving because your aircon is off. But in fact, your engine is working harder because open windows increases air resistance.

    I want to share the fuel consumption of my Strada GLS 08 during my resent trip.

    Naga city to San Rafael Bulacan, (443 KM)

    FC = 10.9 km per liter. (Using Petron diesel + 250ml fuel boster.)
    Wala Patayan ng makina even resting and eating.
    Time to time gamit un 4H kasi maulan and sira un Andaya Highway.

    Bulacan to Naga City same route.

    FC = 10.3 km per liter. (Using PTT Diesel)
    Wala Patayan ng makina even resting and eating.
    Encounter 3hrs trafic palabas ng manila and using 4x4 4H most of the time kasi grabi un ulan at madulas un kalsada.

    Passenger : 3 adults and 2 kids including the driver plus Kargado un bed mga 1 ton.

    Maximun speed 180 kph, normal at 100 kph.

    lancer type.. matipid po ba sa Gas?

    balak ko po kasi bumili ng lancer na model ay nasa 1998-2000 model.

    Share ko lang... before tuneup around 8-10 km/l. pero after tuneup (change oil, spark plugs, air/oil/fuel filter) naging 7-8 km/l na lang. ano kaya nangyari?

    2005 1.6 lancer mt. Stock engine (38,000 odo reading). Mods: Injen-type flame tip carbon fiber high-flow muffler, k&n high-flow drop-in air filter. Running on petron e10 fuel, using fully synthetic mobil1 engine oil.

    City driving: Average 10 to 12 kms per liter, using light to medium gas pedal inputs. Shifting up at 3,000 rpm on average, with mindset on economizing.

    High-way (nlex/ sctex) to subic: Average 8 kms per liter. Using medium to heavy gas pedal inputs, shift points at 80-90% of max rev (5,000-5,500 rpm). Slowing down at double lanes when there is heavy traffic, but otherwise hammering it!

    V02 max: 210 kph * 5,300 rpm on straght descending section of sctex (running on 195/15/50 tires). 2 persons with light bagages on board.

    High-way (nlex/ sctex) to baguio via tarlac: Average 15 kms per liter. Using light to medium gas pedal inputs. Shifting up at 3,500 rpm on average (except when overtaking), this time with mindset on economizing and, with family on board, staying well within safety boundaries.

    I suppose fuel economy is relative. Bieng a safe and knowledgable driver should come first.

    Arnarn,

    If your engine is in fine working order, it just might be the fact that your enjoying your car's new power after the tune-up. Meaning you may be stepping on that right-most pedal more heavily, "feeling" that sense of thrill when you feel your back being pushed against your seat!:evil:

    Otherwise, if you can not discern any improvement in performance, check someplace else that had not been checked. I recently had my valves re-adjusted by a Mitsu mechanic in his free time at his place. Cost me Php300 but it was well worth it! My Lancer, albeit a 2005 model, was given a bump in power by, I would say based just on how it felt, 10-15%. Just by having my valves re adjusted!

    If you are in the Marikina/ San Mateo area, check-out Ped Ferolino, he's the Mitsu mechanic I was referring to. You can contact him though his mobile: 09177413840. He will ususally schedule you on week-ends but don't be surprised if there is a long line of Mitsu vehicles in his place.

    that's quite high. i had a lancer 95 glxi (1.6L). average FC is 10km/L.
    my daily route was from molino bacoor -daang hari - slex -edsa - ortigas - san juan - legarda - intramuros and vice versa.
