Hi guys, tanong ko lang kung kumusta ang lancer box type in terms of maintenance, parts, registration etc. okay pa ba siya? or mahirap siya imaintain dahil wala na masiyado available na parts? mahal na ba mga piyesa? malakas na din ba siya sa gas innately due to the old engine design?

Gusto ko kasi sana ng very basic car, manual windows, manual side mirrors, manual tranny, at kahit no air con basta good running condition.
Here's the thing kasi, my mom bought a scooter a few years back pang palenke lang and subdivision use kaso it's been sitting at my place kasi depreciating lang for the past 5 years (6k kms odo palang) and ayoko naman ng scoot, I also have my own bike/car. Feel ko sayang lang kaya I want to trade it sana sa box type; kasi I feel the box type has already reached it's maximum depreciation saka I also want a long term project car yung dahan dahan ko lang papagandahin hehe. would that be a good idea? hihingin ko nalang sa kanya yung scoot hehe.

Also I am currently a mech eng student/ nag aaral ng fabrication, ano ano po kaya ang kasiya na engines/trannies sa box type if I were to swap it's engine one day? 4age? sr20? 4g63(although these only came in transverse)?

what should I look out for sa boxtypes other than rust sa chassis?

    thanks!!!

Hi IMHO as I'm also driving a lancer 78 since same engine ito ng boxtype 4g33.
    - Basic Parts engine still available.
    - mahirap na parts nito eh makakahanap sa mga katay boys.
    - Parts minsan mahal minsan mura depende sa seller ;) yung iba kasi junk shop ang focus not the orig parts.
    - Rubber parts doors and windshields medyo mahirap at chrome trims.
    - sa gas matipid dapat ito dahil carb depende nalang sa tune-up at carb tuning. ako 500 php gas [Las Pinas to Tangdang Sora two way na]
    - if road worthy hanap mo start sa good chassis, flooring and body. Now a days mahal din ang mag body repair at paint plus time consuming.
    - steering pawis kasi or you want to convert it sa power steering.
    - engine transplant some guys I met they installed 4g63 engine on it.

HTH Let me know if you need assistant hanap kita ng prospect na boxtype.

I would love a W123 sir, but funds are limited for the meanwhile with me being a student still.

Once I graduate and get a more stable income though I'd probably try and get myself a w124 wagon in signal red hehe, yun kasi isa sa mga dream car ko

Box Type first car ko in college!

It was old then... I can't imagine buying a used one now (2018)

IMO, main issues for me. (approx 20 years ago)
    1. It still uses a contact point+condenser+coil - I think you can have this replaced with an electronic system now.
    2. Internal switches / aircon vents - aircon, fog lamp etc - pag nasira, wala kang makitang replacement
    3. Clutch cable & adjuster - ang hirap hanapin ng rubber adjuster nya ng clutch
    4. Side Mirror - I think 2 times ako nag palit looking for the perfect one.
    5. Windshield washer - palaging miss aligned

Thank you sir for the input!
I don't mind old, old is cool 'ika nga nila :grin.
Trim pieces po pala talaga ang rare hmm. Just recently joined groups sa fb about spare parts, medyo inactive ang groups and rare nga talaga ang trim pieces. worse comes to worst po siguro if I get a box type I might go race inspired and just install an aluminum dash and just forget about the switches.

San po kaya ang "Go to" with regards naman po sa mga mechanical parts? marami pa po kaya sa evangelista? or perhaps banawe?

Given the rarity of the box type parts baka mas mura or pareho pa ng cost ng w123. Madming parts pa rin w123 vs older japs.

    Hola,

*Reliability - 150Km yun binilhan namin, pagkabayad na pagkabayad palang byahe na pa manila without any major issue.
*F/C - di ko pa na fu fulltank method pero feel ko pumalo sa 10s-11s km/ltr Highway
*Body Condition - sobrang daming masilya
*Issues - Sandamakmak na electrical gremlins
*Steering - Sobrang tigas compared sa ibang "pawis steering" na oto (b12, ee100, ee90)

All-in-all kung hanap mo talaga e laruan &/or daily ride swak na swak yun old mits...

Man... I've been looking at w123 prices at olx and I just joined the w123 buy and sell facebook group.
I didn't know ganito na po pala ka mura ang w123... napapaisip ako hahaha
there's a sweet 300D up for sale for just 65k and may 200g for around 45k, sa euro united kasi ako nagtitingin dati and lahat dun halos nasa 150-200k range pa.

ano ano po kaya yung mga things na I have to watch out for when looking at a w123? preferably yung 200D or 300D model
I don't mind them being slow pero I worry na I'll be taking on more than I can chew kasi medyo complicated ito compared sa older jap cars diba? i.e. mechanical climate controls, tons of vacuum lines(?), tapos may relay pa para dun sa glow plugs na I have to insert manually? tama po ba or? I have no experience yet po kasi with diesel engines. from what I'm reading right now medyo bomb proof daw po ang turbo diesel versions nito? that seems enticing.

Hi sa mga nagka boxtype lancer or old classic lancers may chance pa kaya maka buy today ng Electronic Distributor, still using the old contact points and condensers.

    Thanks

So basically typical older jdm car problems lang pala sir, I can live with that. It's nice to know na pwede po pala 4G63 para mitsubishi pa rin at heart, will definitely look more into that. Gusto ko rin po kasi sana mag engine swap just to try it, parang thesis ko po sana and just to test ng skills sa fabrication/welding.

Matipid na rin po pala sa gas sir considering it's age; 500php for a round trip to T. sora is way better than what I have right now, yung daily ko kasi sir umaabot 800 php from muntinlupa to commonwealth/fairview one way with moderate traffic (esp. ginagawa mrt 7 ngayon) kaya oks na ako sa ganun hehehe. maintain and tune nalang ng carbs frequently.

I don't mind the pawis steering sir hehe that's 1 less thing to worry about po kasi, gusto ko po sana ngayon all manual lahat so I just have to worry about making it run good enough.

Maraming salamat po sir! I'll pm you sir once I sort things out, if that's okay hehe.
I'd love to learn more about Mitsubishi cars, I'm more of a nissan guy kasi sa ngayon.
    Salamat ulit!

a late 90s sentra efi or corolla gli.
they were so popular back then, and are still plentiful today, that i believe you will have an an easier time looking for parts for these, than a lancer box type.
also, i read somewhere, that their engines are among the most durable ever.
efi is usually maintenance-free, compared to carburator. also, few people today know how to work a carburator, not to mention, sourcing of wear and tear parts.

i used to drive a lancer boxtype.
the sentra and corolla are more comfortable to drive.
no amount of fixing, can make up for the advances in design engineering and technology.

thank you dr.d for the input, siguro I'll ask around kung may willing magpa test drive muna hehe.
I've driven a friends pristine B13 sentra with a jdm/tuned ga16 saka road magnet lowering springs and it was "holy ****" good kasi di ko ineexpect yung performance for that old/cheap of a car. pero truth be told mas na enjoy ko pa driving another friend's corolla TE27 kahit mas mabagal haha just the thought that it was a steel bodied beater that I wouldn't have to worry about it when parking(generally) and feel ko mas special kasi it wasn't a dime a dozen like the ae92s/or b13s hehe.
pero I'll think twice muna about getting a box type vs an ae92/w123 hehehe
yung ae92 kasi very enticing due to the relative easiness of a 4age swap hehe, w123 on the other hand seems to be of really good value.

We still have our '83 A174A A/T, ewan ko pero nagagandahan talaga ako sa design niya, aside from its sentimental value. I personally wouldn't trade it for a slightly modern car.

My plan for it is to acquire a donor car para mapagkuhanan ng parts, siguro pag natapos na ipa restore yung isang sasakyan. [emoji4]

thanks guys! will update soon if this pushes through hehe.
tbh ayoko sana gumastos kasi I still have a motorcycle I'm restomodding para isali sana sa mga comp, pero lot's of enticing prospect cars out there so tignan natin hehehe.
    Thanks!

How is the Lancer Box-type A17x holding up in 2018?
