kung size yung issue, it boils down to two... lancer or avanza.
from those two, ill get the lancer in a heart beat. nakatry na ko ride ng avanza, matagtag yung ride.
pero from the 4 choices, ill go for the vios na lang. maybe consider the new city na rin kung kaya ng budget.

Are these four in the same price range? But from your list in order of preference if it is to be driven by a new driver Vios(not too small not too big), Lancer, Avanza, i10.

Lancer
Avanza
Vios
I10
Fuel Consumption - Since you'll be passing on Edsa, usually traffic so smaller engine = more frugal sa gas.
I10 <- 1.0L?
Vios <- 1.3L
Avanza <- 1.3L
Vios <- 1.5L
Lancer <-1.6L
Mas inde kakatakot idrive sa tabi ng BUS
Lancer
Avanza
Vios
I10
Mas comfy idrive
Lancer
Vios
Avanza
I10
Mas high end/porma ang dating
Lancer
Vios
Avanza
I10
Matibay lahat yan...at bukod sa lahat..maraming murang parts. Marami ring marurunong na mekaniko. For the first 10 years of your ownership, guaranteed naman na walang masayadong nasisira. 11 - 20 years...Yan! Jan lahat lumalabas. Haha!

hmmm, anong klaseng lancer? the 2008 GLX/GLS ba?
if this is the choice, my slight choice is the Vios. Tamang tama sa iyo yan. FC, easier to drive, resale value.
kung Lancer EX, hehehehe. syempre dun ako.
mind if i ask the budget? ayus kasi ng Vios G na A/T eh.... medyo mas pricey nga lang sya kesa sa Lancer GLS na CVT.

If safety is a priority, and if we're talking about the old-body Lancer, it's:
1. Vios - 5 star EuroNCAP
2. i10 - 4 star
3. Lancer - 98 Lancer had 2 stars. The 2000 and up body should be around 3 stars
4. Avanza - Unrated
The i10 has a much stronger crash structure than the old Lancer (the NEW Lancer, the 2.0, should be 5 stars), and the Avanza is not sold in any markets where crashworthiness is a requirement (though it's likely worth 1-2 stars).
Fuel economy:
1. i10 1.1 MT - Vios 1.3 MT - tie (i10 1.1 AT would be a gas hog... inefficient transmission)
2. Lancer - Avanza - tie. The Avanza has a good engine and short transmission gearing
I prefer the Vios of your choices... more comfortable than the i10, and almost as easy to drive. i10 second (easiest to park, by far), Lancer third. The Avanza is only useful as a people carrier, and the driving dynamics are not as secure as the three cars.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

As for reliability... 80's Hyundais were crap-tastic... secondhand Mitsubishi technology mixed with some cobbled-together Korean parts... 90's were so-so... some of the homegrown engines had problems (the Coupe, in particular) but the rest were about average... New Hyundais? The things to look out for are the automatic transmissions on the previous generation Starex (which is still basically an old Mitsubishi transmission design) and some minor niggles with electric power steering. But judging from the Picanto owners feedback (the i10 shares its basic design with the older Picanto, but has a more crashworthy body and revised electronics), Hyundai's new small cars are pretty reliable compared to the competition.
Just don't get the automatics. Again, AT plus small engine equals terrible consumption.
At least we're not getting the same horror stories we're hearing about Chevrolet Optra engines (which are based on Daewoo technology based on Vauxhall technology, which isn't really all that great...). Good thing the new Optras have revised electronics, which cure the fuel problems which plagued and sometimes destroyed first-generation Optras.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
