Mitsubishi launched the Mirage nameplate back in 1978 as an answer to the fuel crisis that threatened almost every continent in the world. It was offered as either a three- or five-door hatchback or a four-door sedan and came with measly 1.4 or 1.6 liter oil burners. Most of us who were born in the rebellious generation of the 80's should still remember the boxy Mirage hatchback that was sold by CARCO, the official distributor of Mitsubishi in the Philippines back in the day. And if you're reminiscing about those “Bagets-inspired” times, then keep your fingers crossed, because Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is reviving the Mirage at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

The all-new Mirage inherits the practicality and functionality from its first generation kin, making the most out of its compact space. When the sub-compact arrives in 2012, it will feature a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder MIVEC engine mated to a CVT. And to aid fuel economy, Mitsubishi added a start-stop function to the engine and used lightweight materials for its interior that should allow it to achieve an astounding 30 km/L fuel economy....
