1999-2000 MX - Non-extended bumper same as 1996-1998.
2000-2002 MX - extended bumper, quad headlights
The same Invecs-II technology is being used by newer Mitsu Products that are not Invecs-III (CVT). The only difference between the one on the pizza with the latest Invecs-II releases it that they made it gate-type already but still retained the 4speed A/T sportsmode. If this technology has many flaws, I doubt if Mitsubishi would still use it on its new vehicles. Check the New Montero Sports. AFAIK, it used 4speed Invecs-II and not Invecs-III (CVT).
The key to maintaining the A/T's long life is proper maintenance of the ATF. I drive a MX 2001 model same body as yours and its already logged 130K, so far no issues whatsover with its Invecs-II tranny.
I think the BnS guy is just underestimating the real value of the car which is typical for them when they acquire cars for resale anyway. MX 2000-2002 (extended bumper) models still resale for about 240-280K in the market when I last checked this week.
