EVO X. It's a cool name, like Speed Racer's mysterious older brother. But believe it or not, Mitsubishi execs are considering starting over again with the next-gen Evo because they insist the car will be a significant departure from the I-IX series we've come to know and love. So you could be looking at Evo 1, take two. Uhhh, someone needs to tell these guys what they're messing with.

Evo X--that's what it'll always be to us--won't appear until 2007. But here's what we know. Renderings making the rounds on various Evo Web sites are close to the actual digital prototype body we've seen with our own eyes (along with a bad-to-the-bone Evo IX wagon concept). The main differences are the absence of hood louvers and the side glass tumblehome is more vertical on the working model. The gaping fish-mouth grille bisected by a thin bumper (as on the Audi A6 or VW Jetta) is real, but still a topic of debate.

Overall, the car looks Italian. Think Alfa Romeo 156 (especially from the rear), but with the wheels pushed farther to the corners and a more menacing, decidedly Japanese anime face with narrow headlamps. Speaking of wheels, the tread width will increase by about 2.5 inches (that's a bunch), wheelbase by about the same, yet the overall length of the car will shrink by some 3.5 inches. We also know Mitsu is considering, at least as an option, its own version of Audi/VW's double-clutch DSG paddle-shift transmission.

car manufacturers are so quick to assume that followers of a particular model of car grow older and more sophisticated. i don't blame them for making some cars softer as the nameplate ages. but sporting breeds should never look old and dull.

i hope they don't make the evo soft and wussy.

I love my Evo V RS. IMO, anything from the VII and up have much to live up to the Evolution badge.
