You're looking at the replacement for Team Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart's venerable rally version of the Pajero sport ute. The Japanese automaker's rally team has just revealed its newest cross-country rally vehicle based on the Lancer, dubbed simply the "Racing Lancer". The Racing Lancer will makes it debut at the 2008 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup in Portugal at the end of October. There it will show off its new turbo diesel engine, specifics of which have been withheld though the new mill has logged over 8,000 km during testing and limited competition. Mitsubishi's new motor marks yet another instance of diesel power gaining prominence in motorsport just like Audi did in the American Le Mans Series with its oil-burning R8 and R10. And just like Audi, Mitsubishi's decision to use a turbodiesel in the Racing Lancer is part of a larger plan that has but one objective: win the 2009 Dakar rally.

Before it was prototype but now their doing an extent testing for this new Racing lancer..

this has been confirmed during the public interview of stephane peterhansel. he was surprised as well when he came to know about the shift from the pajero to the racing lancer- with a V6 diesel engine...

not everyone is in favor this sudden change of model...

but i do know this... the Racing Lancer will have big shoes to fill in! Wish them luck.

Changing from Pajero to Lancer is only the name.. as you can see the front grill and stop light was the only difference to pajero and lancer.. the lenght, height shock and even the tires are almost the same with pajero. The V6 diesel engine was already proven in previous race.. I think the only difference here is the weight, it should be more lighter than the pajero.. so putting V6 diesel engine on the lighter vehicle plus the stability its a much factor when you compute the power to weight ratio.

ah ok... that will be an advantage then. Perhaps aside from the name and design change, they also included the platform- from the bulkier (Pajero) to the lighter (Lancer) one therefore an aide to lighter weight and better power to weight ratio...

yes sir it was advantage to lancer to add up..

The Racing Lancer will be officially unveiled at the Paris motor show in October 2008, and its credentials clearly indicate the Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart team’s ambition to retain its Dakar title. But Mitsubishi's claim that the new car is based on the roadgoing Lancer Sportback looks a little far fetched.
The racer features a new tubular steel frame chassis that reduces the weight and allows the fuel tank to be placed closer to the ground, lowering the Lancer's centre of gravity. And that diesel powerplant, which has been in development since April 2006, is a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 which produces 276bhp and 480lb ft.

Double wishbones provide the suspension front and rear, while stopping power comes courtesy of 16-inch vented brake discs with six-piston Brembo callipers.

There are some Evo genes in there, but this thing is more bespoke racer than Lancer, we suspect...

The Racing Lancer will be officially unveiled on Thursday October 2 at the 2008 Paris Motor Show (Paris Expo, Paris, France) which opens to the public from Saturday, October 4 until Sunday, October 19. It will be displayed alongside the 'Lancer Sportback' upon which it is based and which is due to go on sale across Europe this autumn.

1ST VICTORY FOR RACING LANCER OF TEAM REPSOL MITSUBISHI RALLIART ON ITS FIRST EVENT!

A polished performance from Stéphane Peterhansel/Jean-Paul Cottret (France) and everyone at Team Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart on this weekend's Baja Portalegre 500 has taken the brand new Racing Lancer to its first victory, straight from the box. Mitsubishi's latest cross-country rally car, which will take over from the successful Pajero/Montero Evolution on next January's Dakar, ran perfectly reliably throughout the three-day Portuguese event to win by the margin of 4 minutes 3 seconds after 515.16km of stages.

What counted possibly more than the final result, however, is the fact that the team was able to profit from the final round of the 2008 FIA Cup for Cross-Country Bajas to validate recent development work on the new car in the specific conditions of the fast, twisty mountain tracks near Portalegre.

Racing Lancer is on the move again for the 2009 DAKAR SERIES....

    http://www.ralliart.co.jp/motorsport...ort/index.html

Meticulous pre-event planning ensured that the Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart Team sailed through scrutineering and documentation for the 31st Dakar Rally at La Rural Exhibition Center in the picturesque suburbs of Buenos Aires on New Year’s Day (Thursday).

The experienced crews of Mitsubishi’s four new turbo-diesel ’Racing Lancers’ can now concentrate on their personal preparations for the start of the opening special stage between Buenos Aires and Santa Rosa de la Pampa on Saturday, January 3rd.

All four ’Racing Lancers’ were given a brief shakedown in Buenos Aires on New Year’s Eve by team drivers Luc Alphand, Hiroshi Masuoka, Stéphane Peterhansel amd Joan ’Nani’ Roma to ensure that there were no last minute problems following the cars’ arrival by ’plane from Europe.

The entire Mitsubishi team, consisting of the four drivers and four co-drivers Gilles Picard, Pascal Maimon, Jean-Paul Cottret and Lucas Cruz Senra, team management, mechanics, engineers and support staff were also able to enjoy a New Year’s Eve dinner together in the Argentine capital and toast the start of a New Year where the Japanese manufacturer hopes to clinch an eighth successive victory in the Dakar Rally.

The Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart team has been set up by the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in association with partners Repsol, Valeo and BF Goodrich.

Tomorrow (Friday) representatives from the team will attend the ASO’s official pre-event press conference at La Rural Exhibition Center in Buenos Aires before Mitsubishi’s four ’Racing Lancers’ crews and race support truck teams attend the official ceremonial start on Friday evening, close to the famous Obelisk on the Avenue of the 9th July in downtown Buenos Aires.

Competitive action gets underway from the Argentine capital on Saturday (January 3rd) with a short liaison into a 371km ’pampas’-style special stage in the direction of Santa Rosa de la Pampa.

The stage will start close to the town of San Saladillo and finish at Trenque Lauquen, although there will be three passage controls en route to the capital of the La Pampa province.
