The 2nd gen Fortuner which has a 7-speed tranny I think, lacks the acceleration rush than the previous gen. My friends will just engage the "power" button to get rid of the inherent sluggishness.

Fortunately this occurred while the vehicle was stationary. If the valve popped out while the vehicle was in motion, the sudden loss of pressure might have caused a crash.

The tire valve was not broken, it had become unscrewed. While i have never in my many years of motoring seen a tire valve fail in this way and this might just be a one off fluke, i urge all of you for your safety's sake to spend a minute to check that your tire valves are on tight.

The Montero Sport has no ATF dipstick. ATF is checked by removing a bolt in the transmission. Here is the procedure when an MUT III is not available. (From the MMC Service manual for the Aisin R8AWG/V8AWG(GT))

1.Park the vehicle on a flat place, and move the selector lever to the P range.
2.Remove the drain plug (overflow plug) and check whether a drop of A/T fluid comes out of the drain hole. If not, remove the filler plug and refill the A/T fluid through the filler plug opening. After the A/T fluid comes out, tighten the drain plug by hand.
3.Earth the diagnosis connector terminal No. 1.
4.Apply the parking brake, and start the engine.
5.Depress the brake pedal, move the selector lever from the P to D range, and then move it to every position by holding 2 seconds or more at each range. Repeat this cycle twice, and then return the lever to the P range.
6.Caution!-Depending on ambient temperature, the A/T fluid temperature may exceed the upper threshold (43°C <6B3>, 46°C <4N1>) prematurely. So, speedy operations must be ensured.

Move the selector lever (N → D → N) within 1.5 seconds, and continue the operation until the A/T fluid temperature warning mark is shown on the multi-information display. After the A/T fluid temperature warning mark is shown, check that the fluid temperature is within the specified range (Refer to NOTE). Then move the selector lever back to the P range. The A/T fluid temperature warning mark should go out within a few seconds.
    note

The status of A/T fluid temperature warning mark shows if the fluid temperature is suitable for the fluid level check.

The warning mark is not displayed: The fluid temperature is 40°C <6B3>, 43°C <4N1> or less, thus checking is impossible.
The warning mark is displayed: The fluid temperature is between 40 and 43°C <6B3> or between 43 and 46°C <4N1>, thus checking is possible.
Warning mark is blinking*: The fluid temperature is 43°C <6B3>, 46°C <4N1> or higher, thus checking is impossible.
*: It will blink at the cycle of ON for five seconds and OFF for one second, and the buzzer will sound every approximately five seconds. Note that only the buzzer sounds every five seconds without blinking.
When the ambient temperature is low (10°C or lower), move the selector lever to the P range, warm up the engine for 15 minutes with the engine speed of 2,000 to 2,500 r/min. Then, the fluid temperature becomes approximately 40°C. In such case, after the fluid temperature increased, leave the engine idling for 5 minutes, and then check the fluid level.
7.Remove the drain plug (overflow plug), and check whether a drop of the A/T fluid comes out of the rain hole.
    8.<When the fluid is drained>
Wait until the A/T fluid drops.
<When the fluid is not drained>
Remove the filler plug, and pour in the fluid through the filler plug hole until the fluid comes out of the drain plug (overflow plug) hole. Wait until the A/T fluid drops.
9.Tighten the drain plug (overflow plug) with a new gasket to the specifieMd torque.
    Tightening torque: 16 ± 1 N·m
10.Tighten the filler plug with a new O-ring to the specified torque.
    Tightening torque: 39 ± 15 N·m

Warning! USE ONLY GENUINE MITSUBISHI ATF-MA1-This ATF has a lower viscosity in the actual operating temperature range and reduces drag loss, improving the fuel economy. With the reduced drag loss, the low temperature starting performance of the engine is improved.

Using any other ATF will cause the transmission to malfunction.

The Aisin R8AWG/V8AWG 8 Speed transmission has no ATF dipstick.

The ATF levels are checked by removing bolts in the transmission.

Only Mitsubishi ATF MA1 should be used in these units as it is a special low viscosity ATF specifically designed for the Aisin 8 speed AT.

Here is the service procedure when a Mitsubishi MUT III analyzer is not available. (only dealer service departments have the MUT III or you can get a clone from Aliexpress-software of the MUT III requires a windows XP laptop)

During the fluid level check, the fluid temperature must be between 40 and 43°C <6B3> or between 43 and 46°C <4N1>. If the temperature is outside this range, set the fluid temperature to the suitable temperature, and then check the fluid level.

**Sorry tried but could not upload the illustrations showing the locations of the fill plug bolt and the appearance of the warning mark that appears on the dashboard display.

I sometimes wonder whether the casa service guys really read the service manual and go through this procedure or do they just pump ATF into the transmission fill hole till it stops dripping out? Kaya better to watch when you have them do this to your ride!

Anyway the Aisin 8 speed is a rather high-tech piece of engineering so don't let your mechanic mess around with it without really understanding it.

BTW for your info the 4WD drive on the MS Sport can be used in 4W high mode on ordinary roads because the MS Sport 4WD has a Torsen center differential (like the Audi Quattro)

The 4WD on the Fortuner has no center diff which means you cannot use it sa kalye in 4WD mode. The Fortuner 4WD can only be used off-road where the conditions allow wheel slip. Use the Fortuner 4WD on the road and the transfer case will go kaput in a jiffy!

Well that is what the service manual called it so i cannot argue with the Mitsu engineers who wrote it

You are right. ATF MA1 is not a special ATF. There are in fact no "special" ATFs as ATF fluids are manufactured to a set of parameters established by the transmission designer as what is needed by the particular transmission design. As you so rightly point out, there exist many ATF fluids from different manufacturers that meet the parameters specified by the ATF MA1 specification.

I agree you can use a non-Mitsu branded ATF in an Aisin R8AWG/V8AWG 8 speed as long as it is equivalent to the ATF MA1 specification.

Unfortunately the service manual does not specify a service interval, only an ATF Fluid level check and an ATF Fluid change procedure with/without the use of an MUT III.

I believe there is a service interval specification in the owner's manual.

Kindly update us sa findings ng casa. Any kalikot done sa ECU? Anong error ang naka lagay? Can erase ng OBD2 reader para maitakbo yung sasakyan?

Casa (Citimotors makati) told me, I was number two... the first incident, they just changed the battery and made a reset, everything was good after.

Mine was a bit different, changing the battery/jumper cables all didn’t work... so they actually changed the steering lock module and key detection module ... according to them it’s a combo part... so both were changed ....

So basically they gave me a new battery, new steering lock module and key detection module ... all under warranty ...

So my damaged was the towing service and the time ... Casa was very apologetic and isolated, fixed the problem right away naman.

    So far so good ako.

    Hope this helps

Basically, first line of defense is, remove battery for 5 mins... change battery and or have jumper cables installed.... hopefully this will reset the computer ... (this was also the instruction I got from Casa)

If this fails, have it towed, with all the checklist... steering will still be lock, handbrake won’t release ... so get a towing service that has rollers
