Is this the next Mitsubishi Lancer sedan?

You have already read here at GTChannel that Mitsubishi is still undecided about producing a Lancer Evolution successor; but we here have faith that the execs there will do the right thing. Recently, we got our hands on an image of the next Lancer (created from inside information), which is scheduled to debut in the summer of 2014. For the Three-Diamond company, the Lancer is a very important product as it has been the strongest-selling vehicle in Mitsu’s lineup the past several years. We hear that the car will come with a PHEV option, much like the one in the upcoming Outlander PHEV, but for us, we want to know if there will be a super high-performance option offered.

According to this image, the next Lancer will wear an aggressive face that can easily play the part of the high-performance rally car. While the base car will likely come with a fuel-efficient inline-4, there have been a number of different powerplant options surrounding the Evo successor. One of them is a diesel, while the possibility of a hybrid system to go under its hood is also still there.

Some within Mitsubishi have hinted that the Evo successor, if produced, may not be based on the Lancer at all, a fact we have a hard time believing, given that Mitsubishi doesn’t have the cash to produce an all-new chassis for a car that only sees medium sales volume. Well, we’ll know more as the next Lancer draws nearer. Judging by this image, the next sporty compact sedan is looking pretty good.
