the good:
1. the montero is in its element during speed runs on the nlex, sctex and mcarthur hiway from tarlac northward. really enjoy feeling its speed and power overtaking long lines of other vehicles including long trailers and buses.
2. in 4h mode, speed runs on marcos hiway to baguio felt similarly satisfying. overtaking buses and trailers going up steep inclines is a breeze. really feel the difference in power and traction vs 2wd.
3. another route you may want to try to take your new montero through its paces is via the mountain roads of bataan going south from dinalupihan crossing west through mt samat and northward along the south china sea coast of bataan to subic via morong. heaven...this vehicle is really fast and powerful.
4. regular pms at diamond motors q ave via appointment is problem/worry-free so far
5. very good flood fording ability
6. fc deteriorates from 11-12km/l highway to 8-9km/l in city (qc,manila, edsa rush hour) traffic (though the worst never goes below 7.8km/l) still better than the innova vvt-i
7. oem gps is the way to go (though provincial roads are less accurate than city roads). very useful tmps. fairly accurate fc displayed in the head unit (approximates manual computation closely)
8. suspension is very good
the not so good:
1.in fully stock form (synthetic mitsu oil and oem filter), using unioil from non-flooded stations regularly, the problem the answer to which continues to be elusive, is why since it was bought, does it continue to emit intermittent black smoke during hard acceleration (3000rpm up). after egr has been cleaned and several tests via laptop at the casa (all normal), black smoke emission appears to have lessened but not totally zero. other brands' crdi vehicles do not seem to do the same, only monteros. is it an engine design problem?
2. driver's seat not so ergonomic (but easily solved using seat cushions from concorde)
3. toyota oem alarms are better (cant lock without activating the alarm) and no stock speed sensing door locks
AHH WELL....SO FAR still no regrets as we went through a lot of research before deciding on the purchase. Here's to other satisfied Monty owners. Stay safe.
