Spicing up its 2009 Eclipse, Mitsubishi decided to do away with one sports car styling cue in favor of another.

Previewed at the 2009 Chicago auto show, the updated '09 Eclipse loses the model's unique "light focuser" headlights in favor of projector-style beams, while gaining a new, blacked-out front bumper resembling the latest Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Nissan GT-R.

For 2009, Eclipse GT models also get a new dual exhaust system that boosts the 3.8-liter MIVEC V-6 engine's output to 265 hp (a 2 hp bump), standard Active Stability Control, and HID headlamps.

The Eclipse GS continues with its 162-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, teamed with a five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic transmission. The Eclipse GT comes standard with a six-speed manual and optional five-speed automatic transmission (both automatic transmissions feature Sportronic shifters to allow manual gearshift control).

Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on all models, with anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution, plus larger, ventilated rear discs on the GT. A 650-watt Rockford-Fosgate sound system is optional.

I'm not a big fan of that black bumper. But I too would like a GT in black to tone down the front. I also would've preferred the fog lights to be round. But, all minor quibbles. Mitsu should make a supercharged version..... Eclipse GT-S or Eclipse GT-S/C? It also finally got the dual-exhausts it deserved. I'm getting wood just looking at that rear. He He. But supercharge it baby, supercharge.

One thing I never liked about that model is the clear tail lamps. I'd much rather like to see a bit of shiny red in the back, something that I think is severely lacking.

Good job on the author picking up the black bumper resemblance with the R35 Nissan GT-R.

It still looks largely the same though, except for the deleted Boulay pyramid badge-nose. I'd expect it to drive the same too with oodles of torque steer

Nah. I like it with the V6. A V6 has a much more upscale and polished feel to it. No amount of balance shafting can make the 4G63 feel and sound more refined than the V6. But, the V6 can still use a touch of supercharging.....
