MANILA, Philippines -- A letter asking Director General Avelino Razon to resign as chief of the Philippine National Police is making the rounds among graduates of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), the Philippine Daily Inquirer learned Thursday.
But the PMA graduates, called Cavaliers, interviewed by the Inquirer said the call for Razon to resign was not because the PNP chief was perceived to be incompetent or corrupt.
Rather, the call is for Razon, a member of the PMA Class of 1974, to resign and “protect his integrity” amid allegations the PNP was actively engaged in efforts to cover up the real events related to the arrival of Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. from abroad last week.
“We are disappointed and sad with how the incident besmirched Sonny’s integrity as a person, a Cavalier and a police officer. He should resign now and show he cannot be used by this government,” said one senior Cavalier, who refused to be identified to protect his identity. “Sonny” is Razon’s nickname.
“Everybody knows his (Razon’s) good reputation. He should preserve that and resign. He is retiring soon as Chief PNP anyway. He can walk away now for the good of the country,” said the senior Cavalier, who said he has read the letter.
Razon found himself in the middle of a storm when it was revealed that policemen picked up Lozada from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Tuesday and whisked him away from the prying eyes of the media who were waiting to interview the key witness in the scrapped National Broadband Network (NBN) deal
