In the Chinese mall arms race, this facility opened a year after the Golden Resources Mall to displace it as the country's and the world's largest. The space includes wind mills and theme parks, plus a replica of the Arc de Triomphe.

Gross Leasable Area: 6 million square feet

Not sprawling, this is a stacked-up five-story mall. Approximately 1,000 stores, selling plenty of familiar global brands like Nike and DKNY. A truly ambitious real estate project, with new apartments and offices, surround the mall. A tough location outside the heart of the city has resulted in disappointing traffic from foreign tourists.


3. SM Mall of Asia

Location: Pasay City, Philippines
Year Opened: 2006
Gross Leasable Area: 4.2 million square feet

Includes the first Olympic-sized swimming pool and first IMAX theater in the Philippines. Spread over four buildings, customers can get around on a 20-seat tram.

Location: Istanbul, Turkey

Gross Leasable Area: 3.8 million square feet

Europe's largest shopping mall has a roller coaster, wave pool and several IMAX theaters.


5. West Edmonton Mall

Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Year Opened: 1981
Gross Leasable Area: 3.8 million square feet

The biggest in North America, the West Edmonton Mall has over 800 stores, along with attractions like a water park, skating rink, casino and rides.


6. SM Megamall

Location: Mandaluyong City, Philippines

The first real suburban mall in China, located about an hour from downtown Beijing, this center has four levels with parking for 8,000 cars, plus a man-made beach. Bootlegged DVDs of American movies are a top seller.

Has been known to attract over half a million shoppers on a good day. Another mixed-use space, the mall has a hotel and office tower in addition to retail stores.


10. SM City North Edsa

Location: Quezon City, Philippines
Year Opened: 1985
Gross Leasable Area: 3 million square feet

The first major "mega mall" built by SM Prime Holdings, which now claims three of the largest 10 in the world. It's a five-story complex that boasts over 100 retail outlets and restaurants, along with 12 cinemas, a bowling alley and skating rink. An IMAX theater could be added soon.

a western friend was amazed knowing that phil has 3 entries in the worlds largest malls. they never thought a poor country in the eyes of other countries could have such huge centres. Another friend visited phil was stunned of seeing huge malls populated with thousands of happy customers

San ka makakakita na ginagawang ala "Picnic or Park" ang mga malls? Diba sa Pilipinas lang? Darating sa mga malls umagang-umaga na naka jeep na punung-puno, magpapalamig lang sa loob ng malls, konting shopping, minsan hindi pa nga, then babalik ulit sa jeep para mag lunch or kumain ng merienda, then balik ulit sa loob ng mall hanggang magsara halos! Grabe todo nato!

Totoong gulat na gulat ang mga expats sa ating bansa dahil kahit na Third World Country tayo ay nakukuha pa rin nating mag enjoy at mag malling! Eh samantalang sa kanila ang mga malls halos langawin na lang! Biruin ninyo, ang mga paninda nasa 70% off na eh wala pa ring nabili, samantalang dito sa atin basta sale eh nagkagulo ang mga mamimili pati na rin mga mandurugas! (hehehehe)

For me, lalu na pag weekends at nakakakita ako ng mga pami-pamilyang naka jeep at pumupunta sa malls, natutuwa ako kase nakikita ko ang "family bonding" ng mga Pinoy.

Yun yung sinasabi nila na ang mga Pinoy Families ay closely-knit sa hirap man or sa ginhawa.

West Edmonton mall is the World's Largest Entertainment and Shopping Centre that I've ever seen w/ almost 900 diff. stores, hotel, waterpark, restaurants, theater, ice hockey ring and Asian Supermarket and many more. Its like World Disneyland without Mickey and Pluto.

But if you think about it, the hot weather makes going to fully airconditioned malls for leisure a practical idea. In the USA, with its cooler weather, nature parks and smaller open air strip malls are more ideal places to spend the time without all the crowds to deal with. In Metro Manila, there isn't any place aside from the usual malls that people can go to.

Tama nga naman kung tag init mas gusto pa nila mag ikot sa mall.. sabihin pa na may dala silang isang barangay at may dalang jeep.. kikita pa din ang mall.. may pay parking.. tapos hindi ma iiwasan walang bibili don sa mga nag iikot hehehe
