May 4th, 2004 07:42 PM #2MAY 5, 2004 TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
by Francisco Lao, Jr and James Kevin Ty
There will be a total lunar eclipse that will be visible in the Philippines on May 5, 2004. During this event, one can see the Full Moon gradually being eclipsed by the Earth's shadow. The entire event gives one an impression of viewing the Moon with all of its phases from "Full Moon stage (Uneclipsed Moon) to New Moon stage (Moon in Totality) then back to Full Moon again (Uneclipsed Moon again!) in one session.
The eclipse will formally start in the early morning at 2:48am and ends before sunrise at around 6:12am. Totality on the other hand will start at 3:52am till 5:08am.

Send Me Your Venus Photos
May 3, 2004 - With Venus reaching its brightest point, I'm going to set you all a little challenge: take some photos. Grab your digital camera (with or without a telescope) and snap a picture. Since Venus is just a really bright star in the sky, I'd like to see some context in the picture. Maybe show some of your local horizon, or a nice sunset - let's see Venus from where you live. Send in your pictures and I'll publish a bunch. Tell me your name, location, and anything interesting you did to capture your image (or an interesting story about how you organized your family to get outdoors).
Get outside, enjoy the sky!

Venus Brightest This Week
May 3, 2004 - Already blazing in the Western sky, Venus reaches its brightest this week before it begins to dim again. At magnitude -4.5, it's 8 times brighter than Jupiter (-2.3) and 23 times brighter than Sirius (-1.1); it can even cast faint shadows. Venus is so bright right now because it's only 72 million kilometres away. This is the time when so many people make calls to 9-1-1 because they think it's a UFO in the night sky.
