My wife and I attended a gathering of her friends she haven't met for a long time. I was just wondering about the opening line "tumaba ka ha" or "pumayat ka ha" between friends who haven't talked for a long time. Maybe because they haven't met each other for a long time so no topic is very apparent on the opening statement.

And there is this one conversation I over heard. It's a usual kamustahan of friends who haven't met for a long time but there was an apparent pause on every statements. It's like they are scrambling in their brains for questions to ask each other. I just find it weird and it seems it makes the kamustahan fake. I don't know.

Sobrang popcorn mode at laughtrip ako dun kanina eh. Hindi malaman kung may healthy na discussion pa bang nagaganap. Mapa-fanatics or bashers man, may namecalling pang nagaganap, rantings, fake news daw, etc. Puros negative na lang ata andun. Oh well, open forum nga naman dito. Kawawa naman ang mga fanatiko. Amused parin talaga ako eh.

From experience when someone tells you pumayat ka ah, he or she is fishing for compliments in return, " hindi ah, ikaw ang pumayat, parang ang bata mo ngayon" but when someone tells you, tumaba ka, that means talagang tumaba ka..am i right? Hehe

Ok lang girl to girl magsabihan ng ganyan. Ang creepy ay pag lalake nagsabi sa babae about physical appearance. Both creepy and impolite. Haha. Well of course unless wife or gf mo sya.

Isn't it a compliment in the cultural context of the Philippines that when someone says you've grown fat, you're doing well financially?

However, when someone says, you've grown thin, it is usually in the negative?

Most of the time when they said you've grown fat, they meant "why did you let yourself go".

Not papi..when someone now calls you fat, meaning your just spending more time in the kitchen or basically not taking care of yourself..in other word letting yourself go..

When talking to a child possibly. It means that the parents are well off enough to make sure their child is well nourished.

But after a certain age, it flips to mean “you’ve let yourself go”

If someone wants to know if theyre fat or not, its in pictures, the mirror(and the mind) plays tricks, take a leveled whole body pic, none of the overhead selfie tapos puro filters. Let yourself be the judge, not others
