Filipinos from all walks of life are expected to again flock to betting stations tomorrow to try and win the P175-million jackpot for the 6/49 Super Lotto online lottery draw of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

Researchers said the odds of winning, for every P20 bet, is one in 13,983,816 or a very low probability rate of 0.0000000715.

An item in the website icarus.mcmaster.ca said the number of different winning combinations can be determined by using a formula that appears to be as complicated as E = MC2, Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

The website explained that since there are a total of 13,983,816 different combinations of six numbers which could be drawn from the set of 1 to 49 – meaning that there are 49 possibilities for the first number drawn, 48 possibilities for the second number, 47 for the third, 46 for the fourth, 45 for the fifth, and 44 for the sixth.

“If we multiply the numbers 49 x 48 x 47 x 46 x 45 x 44 we get 10,068,347,520. However, each possible group of six numbers can be drawn in different ways depending on which number in the group was drawn first, which was drawn second, and so on,” it said.

“There are 6 choices for the first, 5 for the second, 4 for the third, 3 for the fourth, 2 for the fifth, and 1 for the sixth. Multiply these numbers out to arrive at 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 720. We then need to divide 10,068,347,520 by 720 to arrive at the figure 13,983,816 as the number of different groups of six numbers (different picks). Since all numbers are assumed to be equally likely and since the probability of some number being drawn must be one, it follows that each pick of six numbers has a probability of 1/13,983,816 = 0.00000007151,” the website said.

Analysts said that the actual probability rate of one number combination winning is roughly the same probability as obtaining 24 heads in succession when flipping a fair coin.

According to www.worsleyschool.net, buying 50 tickets or putting your money on 50 different number combinations for the 6/49 Super Lotto merely increases your chances of 50 out of 13,983,816 for a probability of 0.000003575.

“Yet people win all the time, of course, because millions of tickets are sold every week, and somebody has to win the prizes. It’s just not very likely that it will be any one person in particular – including you,” the website said.

Its analysis and mathematical computation with the not very encouraging statement that if one plays the lotto twice a week, every week, for the next thousand years, “your chances of winning the big jackpot are still only about one percent.”

Larry Cedro, PCSO spokesman, said during the last 6/49 Super Lotto, the jackpot was P161,282,044.80 and as of yesterday sales of the online lottery continue to rise.

“We are expecting the prize to reach P175 million on Sunday,” he said.

Aside from the Super Lotto game, the other lottery game 6/45 Mega Lotto draw has also breached the P101-million mark after nobody won the winning combination in the draw last Wednesday.

PCSO officials said if nobody gets the winning combination in the next Super Lotto draw the jackpot might reach over P200 million before the end of the year. - With Perseus Echeminada
