MANILA, Philippines - Local governments in Metro Manila have less than a year to comply fully with a metrowide ban on the use of plastics and styrofoam in the packaging and handling of items and food products in all establishments, markets and sari-sari stores, the Metro Manila Development Authority has said.

"I expect next year all the 17 LGUs (16 cities and the lone municipality of Pateros) would implement a similar ban. Right now, after Muntinlupa, Las Pinas followed suit in imposing the ban on plastics. Makati made a similar announcement, though the city’s total ban takes effect next year yet. Similar moves are under way in Taguig and Quezon City," MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said.

Besides the LGUs, certain private retail chains have also encouraged the use of reusable “earth bags” in order to do away with plastic bags.

Similar measures are also being proposed in the cities of Mandaluyong, Caloocan, Manila and Valenzuela.

Outside Metro Manila, similar bans are in effect in Antipolo, Rizal, Los Banos and Binan in Laguna, Carmona and Imus in Cavite, Lucban and Infanta in Quezon, Sta. Barbara in Iloilo, Batangas City and Burgos, Pangasinan.

Uncontrolled dumping of waste was also one of the aggravating factors cited by the MMDA during the massive flooding brought by typhoon Ondoy in 2009.

What are we going to use then? Paper?

Plastics and styrofoam can be recycled after use. Some, mix it with hollow blocks and asphalt and through tests it was even proven that by atleast 20% the product became stronger. Plastics are easy to transport, too. Since it's relatively lighter than paper itself. Hence, carbon emissions would be lessened by a bit, which is then again, good for the environment.

It takes a lot of trees to supply us the number of papers the people use. It's not even reusable. For one, I would highly doubt that paper containers which contained fresh products would be recycled, else, it would just thrown away after use wherein plastics are commonly reused by households. For some, it may be used as a container for trash and what not.

I'm not supporting the use of plastic, nor the use of paper. Thing is, plastic isn't the main culprit of why we are experiencing global warming and recurrent flooding, it's the ignorance of people that's causing it. Our laziness tend to convince us not to segregate anymore, our laziness tend to convince us to not throw plastics on proper bins else we would just throw it on the nearest spot. We should start the change, we are old enough to know what's wrong and what's right.

We cannot live without plastic, however we cannot live through plastic either. I say, our government shouldn't fully ban the use of plastics ergo, just minimize the use of them. For example, groceries can be asked if they could supply customers reusable green bags that they could use instead of plastic. Or, supermarkets could also ask people to use traditional 'bayongs' which are often times composed of recycled plastics as well. For our fresh/frozen products, we cannot help but to use plastics. You know, it's more hygienic to wrap your fish with a clean plastic than wrap it with what ... a Manila Bulletin page.

Tip: if you are buying Wilkins na tubig yung tag 5 liters ata na pack in six yung pangbalot nun na malabong plastic nabibili ng por kilo 7 or 8php.

nung one time kumakain kami sa isang ice cream parlor sa may pasig meron isang customer nanghingi ng lalagyan para don sa nabili niyang ice cream. sabi nung may-ari hindi niya maibigay yung paper bag kasi pag don naman nilagay is mabubutas lang at mahuhulog pa yung ice cream. hehe. kaya si ate hawak na lang yung ice cream cup na binili niya. hehehe.

It will be. There are a good number of businessmen who manufacture and have invested in equipment primarily for making your typical plastic bag and assorted items and Metro Manila is the biggest consumer.

IMO, this has to be studied well first before an nationwide (or even MM-wide) shift on its impact to the demand and supply of substitutes and whether these will be easily recycled thereafter. In our subdivision, we segregate our wastes so its not a problem but in general areas, its probable that paper based products will be thrashed immediately after.

pag pumunta kayo sa Paete Laguna, matagal na nila ginagawa yan.. pag bumili kayo sa mga tindahan either paper bag or sa kahon nila nilalagay..

btw, yung Ace Hardware dito sa Greenbelt1, paper bag na gamit nila..

last year pa na implement sa munti yan.sa LP janaury this year lang.but along binan/carmona may mga establishment na din na nagamit ng paper bag/brown bag.kaya lagi ako may 3 tote bag sa trunk.yung plastic may nagamit pa din sa munti but minimal nlng.

Sa Pasig, matagal na yan ganoon. SM Hypermart recycles their boxes and uses paperbags for the meats. Pero yun meat, naka plastic pa rin but yun clear and walang handles.

I fully support this measure. Marami na akong greenbags and when I purchase something sa store na kaya ko naman bitbitin, di ko na pina-pa-plastic. Dati naman, wala naman plastic bags noon but we were able to buy the usual stuffs we still buy now. We have been recycling newspaper and cartons into paperbags anyway. I guess this is sustainable.

SM also introduced noon ang bio-degradable na plastic but I guess matagal rin ma-decompose ito.

Around the 70s, walang plastic na bag and bottles. Puro RECYCLABLE manila paper bags and glass bottles dati. Dati sa Unimart, the paper bags were as big as bayongs.

Dito sa amin Antipolo ganyan na din puro paper bags. Kaya si Misis 4 pcs na reusable bag ang ginagamit pag namimili sa Shopwise, may 8% discount pa siya pag gumamit siya nang 1 pc. reusable bag.

I work in a styro company. I think these guys need to be aware na RECYCLABLE ang styro and plastic. Di ko lang maisip bakit parang sarado ang isip ng mga nagpapasimuno nito.

Ang tao ang dapat ditong turuan paano ito i-recycle. Disiplina lang ng tao ang kailangan para dito. Di ito kailangan i-ban. Tayo rin ang mahihirapan kung ito ay mawala. Imagine nalang, saan mo ilalagay ang isang basang bagay, sa paper bag ba? Eh di nabutas ito.

To all, I am asking na paki-kalat lang ang impormasyong ito. Malaking tulong ito para mabusksan ang isip ng mga tao tungkol sa pag-recycle. Nasa sa inyo na rin kung tatanggapin ninyo ang mga pinakita ko, pero I have seen this process first handed.
