    August 19, 2013 6:14am

In the wake of flooding caused by heavy rain since Sunday, Malacaņang on Monday ordered the suspension of work in government offices not directly involved in disaster response.

Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. also ordered the suspension of classes in Metro Manila and areas affected by heavy rain, radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported.

Ochoa's suspension order covered work in all government offices in Metro Manila except if those agencies are involved in disaster response, the report said.

"Upon the recommendation of PAGASA, the Executive Secretary has ordered the suspension of classes in ALL levels over Pangasinan, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro and Metro Manila. Likewise, the Executive Secretary has also ordered the suspension of work in the Government Offices in Metro Manila except those involved in disaster risk reduction and management," presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.

PAGASA had recommended on Sunday night that classes in those areas be suspended at the preschool and elementary levels.

Several areas in Metro Manila remained flooded as of Monday morning.

Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of work in Metro Manila courts. — ELR, GMA .
