Phase-out.
A few FB friends have parents who are part of the transport sector. They aren't against updating per se - everyone agrees that jeeps are ancient tech. What they don't agree with is that they're expected to buy whatever new alternative will be shoved down their throats as if it was just like buying a new pair of jeans.
Many jeepney drivers live on a day-to-day basis. While you can argue that jeepney operators who own multiple jeeps are moneyed, there are also jeepney drivers who own their unit and don't have the capacity to plop down a million pesos (or thereabouts) for a new, modern jeep.
It's a valid point to ask for a vehicle modernization scheme from the government - support in terms of timeline of the phase-out, flexible payment terms, trade-in of old jeepneys, etc. It will be easier for all if the government facilitates a smooth transition by acknowledging that the drivers need their help.
