The Land Transportation Franchise Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will cancel the franchises of operators who joined Thursday's transport strike to serve as a warning that the government is serious in its crackdown against "selfish jeepney operators."
"We are coordinating with the Philippine National Police for the acounting of all those who participated in the jeepney strike as our basis for the cancellation of their franchises," LTFRB chairman Ma. Elena Bautista said.
Bautista said the LTFRB has already cancelled at least 150 franchises of jeepney operators who have joined in past strikes and they will immediately initiate legal proceedings for those who were involved in yesterday's mass action.
Thursday's nation-wide transport strike stranded thousands of commmuters in various parts of the country.
Bautista hinted that if jeepney operators continue with their mass action, this would hasten the eventual phase out of the public utility jeepney.
The phase-out of jeepneys is a possible option currently being studied by the national government to ease up the traffic in the metropolis.
"They cannot hold the government hostage, they have to think twice because phase-out is among the options being studied by the government," she said.
