Mayor Imelda Aguilar has ordered the strict enforcement of the city's antismoking ordinance, and assembled a composite team to enforce the measure and ensure that business establishments concerned would comply with the order.

Under Ordinance No. 353-97, smoking, which is defined as any "lighted cigarette, cigar, pipe or smoking paraphernalia, whether or not being puffed, inhaled or smoked" is banned in public and private schools, elevators and government run, owned or controlled agencies or offices.

It is also strictly prohibited in storage areas of combustible chemicals, liquids and gases.

Gas stations, hospitals, clinics, health centers, medical laboratories, movie houses, auditoriums, barber shops, beauty parlors and public comfort rooms are classified as no smoking areas.

Smoking is also banned in public utility vehicles such as buses, AUVs, jeepneys and taxis.

such as restaurants, malls, supermarkets, canteens, food courts, markets, night clubs and factories are required to provide smoking areas, with proper signage to guide the public.

"Spare no one in enforcing the ordinance," Aguilar told members of the enforcement team.

Individual violators face penalties of up to P500 with community service. Establishments found in violation of the measures face a fine of up to P5,000.
