I also don't understand why my brothere's allowance was way bigger than mine. I think it's because his school was much farther so he needed a bigger allowance to cover for gas. Pero hindi rin e....

Yep. Which wasn't really much of a problem since I was saving roughly 60% of regular allowance by mapping my schedule according to my meal times. Yun tipong 1-6pm class or 8-11am... para lagi sa bahay kumakain
I also go home when my break's too big since I'm more productive that way such as a time na 8-940am class -> uwi -> eat at home -> 3pm to 7pm class.

Anong pagtitipid sa allowance na ginawa niyo nung kayo ay estudyante pa lang?

Actually, my older brother's allowance was higher than mine. And this is comparing 2008 to his 2003 monetary valuation at that time. Pag regular allowance ko was 8,400php (2013).. his was roughly 9,600php (2003) per month. The reason for this is kinda hilarious and it pissed me off a lot over the span of 5 years that I'm in college because of the cost differential.
After we graduate kasi, our allowance evaluation will be a gauge on how good your negotiation skills is. We negotiate with our parents and we have to defend why we came to that price point. The logic for this is that life and business is a negotiation. If you end up negotiating less, that's your fault so sulk it up.
So before yun interview namin, we had to visit yun DLSU disguised as a visiting student (you know.. prospective students!) and I had to do market research such as the ff. real life examples of what I did.
Food
Of course ayaw mo lagi ng tipid meals.. you can't also set McDonalds as a basis either since it'll be "bakit ang taas ng daily allowance mo when a meal in McDonalds costs roughly 140php on average? Ilan beses ka ba kumakain? Tatlo?".. you'll also need to factor in snack costs -- magkano ba mga quek-quek dito? eh mga candy? How about the occasional milk tea?
Miscellaneous
How about school supplies? Reference books? xerox costing and frequency? eh mga internet-cafe cost mo?
Special Allowance
My trip will also include gas cost -- how far is the typical school trip? how about traffic? my vehicle's fuel efficiency?
So you present your target price. Bawal masyado mataas since if my father smells BS, automatically doon ako sa allowance ni mother.. and that's hell is because my mother makes idolizes Scrooge sa spending habits niya. So you present, they will rebutt, you'll increase allocation on some areas.. and you'll be cutting some expenses you cannot-explain-why-but-you-want-it (in my case, it was my Php100/hour computer rental estimate.. I pattered it after EGG in GH kasi BWAHAHAHA)
Eventually, I managed to defend my 8,400php monthly rate. I tried adding in a +% after every year thanks to regular 3% inflation pero ayaw pumayag since we calculate for present value. Problema lang, after ng interview, nalaman ko nalang masmataas yun allowance ng brother ko just because of one reason:
He included dating costs sa regular allowance and my father approved of it.
Pota. Daya. Di ko naisipian yun.. there I was thinking I should pony it up on my savings so that assumption and don't-want-to-try-to-ask mentality costs me Php72,000 of forgone opportunity cost over my 5 years in school.
P.S. My sister had to settle for Php4,300 college allowance (with a bigger special allowance) just because ayaw niya dumaan sa process. It's that kind of pressure na talagang parang real-life.Last edited by jhnkvn; March 2nd, 2014 at 12:07 PM.
