Sixty-six people were killed and many more injured when a stampede broke out at a stadium in the Philippine capital, local radio quoted unnamed officials at the scene as saying.

Metro Manila authority executive director Lito Vergel De Dios said in a radio interview that a crowd had been gathering around the ULTRA stadium since Wednesday to get into the taping of a popular television variety show.

He was earlier quoted as saying 54 people had been killed.

Officials contacted by AFP said they were still trying to compile a total from all the hospitals in the area.

De Dios said someone in the crowd was believed to have shouted "bomb," sparking a panic that caused people to trample one another.

Dead bodies, most of them women, were taken out of the stadium on stretchers and laid down on a dirty street, covered with newspapers, plastic bags and discarded cloth.

A little boy was seen crying over the body of his mother, trying to awaken her.

Thousands of people were still streaming through the area after the incident, milling around dead bodies and blocking the entry of ambulances.

Discarded shoes and slippers along with broken bottles and food were scattered all around the stadium.

    ---

66 na yong namatay ayon sa huling ulat na nabasa ko sa yahoo.com .

Nagtataka lang ako, di pa na-p-post sa inq7.net yong balita?...

iniisip ko "exclusive" lang yong balita sa abs-cbn.

Noli De Castro, being a former ABS-CBN kapamilya, is expected to show up.

Let's not judge political figures who show up there to help. They are not hogging the spotlight anyway or making any media publicity to promote themselves. Mas masakit kung yung mga binoto mong tao will not show up when there is a tragedy.

Let's also not judge their decision to continue the show. A public service version of Wowowee is probably okay. Pero kung tinuloy nila yung show complete with dancing special numbers and the game shows themselves, then that's the time you should be outraged.

    Hinay-hinay lang sa mga accusations.

    i second that.

may i add that wowowee is desperate to climb up the ratings and trying to beat eat bulaga with a stupid host which cannot even pronounce the words clearly. even his english stinks.
it was written on a newspaper that the show is a major flop. the reason why its still on air is because it is aired on the TFC channel abroad.

i dont think na flop ang wowowee. The reason why eat bulaga made some changes for the past month kasi natalo na ng wowowee, and besides its not about stupid host, bad english and ratings its about how you help indigents to make their dreams come true.personally, nanonood ako ng wowowee and sa dami ng natulungan ng programa kaya ito naging number one sa masa.

Not entirely correct. The reason why eat bulaga made some changes for the past months is not because they are losing to wowowee but because the show has been dynamic eversince. Hindi nagsasawa ang mga tao sa kanila dahil hindi sila nauubusan ng gimmick (maliban na lang sa mga segments na institution na).

With regards to helping poor people make their dreams come true, a reliable source told us na hindi naman nila buo nakukuha ang price nila sometimes pa nga kalahati lang. Eto malupet, they show this "reallife maalala mo kaya" dahil maraming kababayan natin ang nakakapanood ng TFC sa ibang bansa(imagine the revenues they get from advertisements and all), naaawa at nagpapadala ng pera. San napupunta? malay ko? Eto masakit... pagbumibisita sila they don't have to fall in line sa gate ng abs-cbn, may sarili na silang silya compared to those poor people na days, weeks and even months na nakapila sa gitna ng init at naghihintay na makapasok sa wowowee na yan.

    sir,
i just quoted what i read in a news daily. its not my own opinion.

marami nga tinulungan ang wowowee, true, pero in most cases, pagtatawanan ka muna para makuha mo ang pera. ginagawa kang tanga. its just simply degrading. then there are those contestants na magsasalita sa interview ni willie, tapos sabay iyak kasi mahirap lang daw at walang pera. para makakuha ng awa at dagdag pera, naging trend na ito sa mga sumasali dyan sa show.
di naman sa nanlalait ako ng tao pero the show is aired in other parts of the world, parang ang pangit tignan na ang mga nasa pilipinas ganyan.

    sample:
if someone asks you to make a fool of yourself in front of national tv for 1th pesos, would you? i won't.

kaya imo, scrap the show. its not funny. its degrading.

    my own 2cents.
    peace.
