MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Three children and a driver were killed when a speeding sports utility vehicle flipped over along the Skyway near Sun Valley in Parañaque city, the Philippine National Construction Corp. (PNCC) said on Sunday.
Radio operator Virgilio Dupaya said the Toyota Fortuner (license plate ZMU-898) could have been running over the speed limit in the Skyway when it flipped over around 2 p.m. Sunday.
“It could have been going at over 100 kilometers per hour,” the radio operator told the Philippine Inquirer in a phone interview.
Killed from the accident include Cheryl Joy Rondon, 10; Shelimar Rakiin, 5; and Daryl Lopez, 10; were killed instantly while the 35-year-old driver, Sehawi Rakiin (not Marilyn as earlier reported), died while undergoing treatment at the Parañaque Doctors Hospital.
Dupaya added that based on their initial investigation, the driver might have lost control of the vehicle, causing her to crash into the road barrier. He said there were no other vehicles in the area at that time.
Ed Nepomuceno, Somco operations manager, said that after the SUV hit the barrier, it flipped over several times before coming to a rest upside down, nearly 100 meters away from the site of impact.
He added that one of the vehicle’s tires was busted, which might have triggered the accident.
Nepomuceno also said they were checking if the victim’s car was in a convoy with another vehicle. The victims were reportedly on their way to a theme park in Laguna when their vehicle hit the road barrier.
