+1 on this. IMO, dressing to the nines can never increase the possibibility of being granted a visa.

Years ago, a relative of mine went to the US embassy for his and his family's visa interviews. Dressed in all their expensive glory, they made sure that they projected themselves in an...affluent manner. Their line of thinking was "If the consul sees that we have money, then they won't think that we would be a flight risk so they would give us a visa." To be sure, the brought all their bank account statements, diplomas, citations, land titles and copies of the scholastic records of their three kids.

    They were denied visas.

I went there using my usual office uniform, a short sleeved white barong. May katabi ako naka suit and nauna sa akin. While being interview, I thought he had a good enough reason to go (he was speaking loudly) but he was denied. That scared me a lot kasi kung ganoon na kahigpit sila, paano na ako.

I just showed my car registration, employment papers and credit card statement, ayun, approved. Got me thinking probably luck is involved also.

Sa totoo nga, sabi rin nga sa akin nung isang Delbros staff (courier ng embassy) na kahit nga mga ibang mamayaman na dedeny ng visa!
Yung iba atang mga consul eh "bad hair day" or di kaya me "PMS" kaya naku malas mo lang pag dun ka nga natapat! (hehehehehe)
But did you know, statistics show that your convincing power on a person especially on interviews are stronger between 11am to 2pm? I just can't recall kung san ko nabasa pero parang totoo nga ata! (hehehehe)
But then again, tama nga yung smart casual... No need to overdress or under dress naman diba?

I agree with smart casual, the least you can go. I used my office long sleeves barong uniform with slack during my interview. Ayun, 10 years..

Its better to be over dressed than under dressed during this interview. As advised by a travel agent, Guys at least should wear slacks and clean leather shoes with polo (long sleeves preferably) or barong. Tie and coat is an option. For ladies, i think slacks or skirt plus semi formal blouse at the least with good shoes and bag. It pays to have minimal make-up too.

Also, I think the consuls are psychiatrist/psychologist and know how to read people's reactions, facial expressions, and body language to tell if they are lying or not.

Wearing the proper attire sure helps but its the real intention of the applicant (whether to be a tourist or tnt) that the consul will see thru the facade of the applicant. They dont really rely on the documents the applicants submit because these can be doctored anyway.

But ofcourse, luck really plays a big role getting a visa or not.

Even while waiting in line for your turn to be interviewed, the consuls are already reading your body language, whether you are relaxed or tensed.

Ofcourse, these are my thoughts only..

Balita ko maluwag daw these days, yung friend ko nag apply last week approved buong pamilya 10 years multiple entry. Yung mga kasabayan daw nila halos lahat approved. Gusto ko na sana mag apply kaso walang plano gamitin pa in the near future, pag ganun daw na di mo ginamit di na daw mabibigyan uli. Tama ba?

Some of them (consul) might consider your attire but final decision depends on their moods. Sala sa init at lamig sila. Well, we can’t blame them. Many of us has outsmarted them.

I think this is true... Pero in my case, I was renewing my passport after more than 10 years! I just wore a polo shirt (or golf shirt, whatever you call it), jeans and sandals. My dad went with me carrying all the documents I needed including pictures, etc. because the one in my old passport was when I was still a kid. When the consul called me, he just told me that my features didn't really change and he was certain that I am really who I am. When he asked me to swear, I noticed that he was really looking at me as if he was studying my face. Napansin din siya ng dad ko. He said that the consul was trying to tell if I was telling him the truth daw and that if I am not pretending to be someone else.

Got my first US Visa when I was just a student.
