BANGKOK, Thailand - Embattled Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Tuesday he would step down because of his party's disappointing showing in national elections. "I am sorry that I will not accept the premier post," Thaksin told a nationally televised news conference. He added that he will remain in office until a replacement is selected.

Wow! even he won the election he will not accept his victory. If only other will follow

with his resignation....all i can say is....thailand's political system and the mindset of their politicians has gone matured....what does this mean? thailand will most likely let us eat more dust when it comes to economic performance...

eh sa pinas? di lang pakapalan ng mukha...lahat gagawin para lang di maalis sa pwesto.

sana maiinggit si GMA kay Thaksin...

For sure, bulusok ang economy nila!

If so, laki utang na loob nila kay Thaksin. Hero pa siya pag nagkataon.

Thailand's political system is very different from ours since the King (which is considered a demi-God among Thai people) still wields a considerable clout over what should happen in that country.

Seems that this thread will just be filled with those "sila magaling tayo hindi" rants.

Well we do have the Catholic Church, but that shouldn't have to do with any politics in the first place anyway.

And no, this isn't a "sila magaling tayo hindi" comment.

excuse me pero di ko yata mapigilan di magreact dito ... if you listen and read the news intently, nanalo actually si thaksin as per his claims. his party still won majority of the seats in the snap parliamentary elections. it was only after the king of thailand talked to thaksin that triggerred his resignation. respect for the king and perhaps... "delicadeza" made him resign. it was not because of the parliamentary system that kicked out thaksin so totally misplaced yung comment. just my 2 cents, peace.

I'm pretty sure GMA wants to leave her post and flee where no one can see her anymore, but charges will be filed against her if she gives up the presidency. Isn't it possible to make a deal with her such that she will no longer be sued just as long as she steps down?

As for Thaksin, what a heroic deed. Thailand will surely rise again.

rise again? thailand has been rising fast after the 1997 currency crisis and never looked backed since then. while the present philippine president has been very proud of her 4% economic performance....thailands's economic performance has been more than 8%...i've been to thailand many times and they are really way ahead of the philippines....even vietnam is performing much better than thailand in terms of economic growth.
