THE MAYON volcano in Albay province blasted 500-meter high ash columns into the air Monday morning, prompting officials to raise the alert level to 4 and order an evacuation of residents within its eight-kilometer radius.

An explosive eruption could happen "possibly within the day," said Ernesto Corpus, chief of the government's Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Unit.

"We entered the explosive phase... Under alert level 4, we will evacuate those within eight kilometers [radius] from the volcano," Corpus told GMA Network television.

"There is a high possibility that there will be explosions today," he added.

The volcano blasted "ash injections" some 300 to 500 meters high at around 7:30 a.m., video footage showed.

Over a week ago, lava started to flow from the volcano.

Corpus said that Mayon followed a pattern -- a major eruption followed lava flows and ash injections.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the ash injections are indications of the imminent explosive eruption of Mayon.

Residents at the periphery of the eight-kilometer danger zone have been experiencing continuous tremors brought about by Mayon’s activity.

be very very careful mga sirs. ganyan ganyan ang nangyari sa pinatubo, nag-erupt at the height of a category 3 storm, accdg to national geographic. main reason kumbakit nagkaroon ng lahar na nagswept ng sobrang bilis hanggang Tarlac and Pampanga.
