THE PHILIPPINES would again assume the presidency of the powerful United Nations Security Council on September 2005, three months before it ends its two-year term as non-permanent member.

The country was a member of the Council on three previous occasions: in 1957, 1963, and 1980.

Assessing the Philippines' participation as "assertive, competitive, and substantive," the country's envoy to the UN said the privilege should be seen as an opportunity to project the image of a strong republic with its delegates "able to articulate the Philippine position on issues with clarity and reason" when it presides at next month's Council meeting.

Ambassador Lauro Baja Jr., permanent representative to the UN, said he is eyeing several international issues that Philippine-style diplomacy would try to help sort out involving conflicts in Iraq, the Middle East, Haiti, Cyprus, Liberia, Sudan's Darfur crisis, the International Criminal Tribunals on Yugoslavia and Rwanda, and civilians in armed conflict.

He said the Philippine UN team learned many lessons in the first five months since the country assumed its non-permanent seat in the body where membership is a privilege sought after by the 191 UN members.

i don't get it....sino ang philippine representative sa UN na pwede mag assume ng presidency sa security council? si Baja ba?

sure it's a good news to philippines but will it be a real good news to that filipino who will assume that presidency and the OFWs in the middle east? mapolitika din kasi lalo na pag sa security council ng UN....tapos matindi pa ngayon nangyayari sa iraq at israel....di kaya pagiinitan ng mga arabo ang mga pinoy OFWs kasi siempre di maiwasan na yung filipino na head ng security council eh papanig sa US or israel?
