FRIDAY had been a messy, most stressful day for ABS-CBN honchos Eugenio Lopez III and Luis Alejandro.

The two spent the whole day handholding while handing out letters of redundancy to 35 news and current affairs staffers, including the most senior, vice president Jesus Maderazo, as well as the personal secretary of the late patriarch Eugenio Lopez Jr., reporter Twinkle Valdez.

Talking heads Erwin Tulfo, Pia Hontiveros, and Gene Orejana likewise opted for early retirement, although all three still remain "talents" and will continue hosting their respective talk shows.

According to the grapevine, a number of the 35 veteran broadcasters broke down upon receiving the news, despite the management offer of a generous three-month salary for every year of service as separation package.

The early retirees constituted about a fifth of the news and currents affairs division, right on the target 20-percent across-the-board reduction that the management hopes to achieve to return the fallen market leader back on championship track.

To strengthen news-gathering and elevate it from the "sampalan-sabunutan" (quarreling) staple that its primetime TV Patrol has been filling its one-hour airtime, ABS-CBN appointed former CNN regional bureau chief Maria Ressa, who joined January as consultant, as news and current affairs head.

The division used to be headed by Erap Press Secretary Ricardo Puno Jr., who chose to remain as talk show host after he was made to toe the management line that news executives could not simultaneously host public affairs programs.

Along with Ressa, a former staffer, Charie Villa, has also been lured back from Reuters TV Asia to head newsgathering, replacing David Jude Sta. Ana, whom the network had pirated from GMA7.

"The objective of this reorganization is to strengthen the position of ABS-CBN as the most credible and respected in the field of news and current affairs, guided by world-class values, principles, and operating standards," Lopez and Alejandro said in a joint statement.

Henceforth, if the grapevine were to be believed, the Lopez network would also include critical news instead of kid-glove treatments that Lopez-related companies like Manila Electric Co. and Manila North Luzon Tollways Corp. have been getting.

And unlike GMA-7 (parent company of INQ7.net), ABS-CBN will continue with its policy of prohibiting its news anchors and personnel from endorsing commercial products, as well as taking on political and public relations consultancies, another ABS-CBN official added

    Charo Santos-Concio

"Pa'no naman 'yun?

"No, they were offered a very generous package by the company, so they can't really claim na magugutom sila.

Dagdag pa nito, "It also pains management to do this, kaya lang kailangan, eh."

As we all know, malaki ang lugi ng kumpanya of late, over and above the fact na malaki ang overhead na kailangan nilang i-maintain for the past several years.

It's about time, indeed.

They won't allow her to anyway, since senior vice-president siya for news and current affairs. Besides, the public will know her soon enough through the changes she will be instituting within the division.

I don't think this will affect the lopezes considering their diversified business... just like new medical city raised in their land at pasig and apektado dito ay syempre mga talents esp. young talents who enters starbandwagon sacrificing their future kahit konting exposure since domino effect yan sa mga shows na flop

    my toe scents....

Ganyan din ang nangyari sa Meralco. Early retirement, puro contratual, mass lay-offs, etc.

Pabagsak na nga ba ang Dos?
