Motto: There is no Seal Team 6

Meet The 'Seal Team 6', The Bad-Asses Who Killed Osama Bin Laden
    Robert W. Johnson | May 2, 2011, 7:43 AM

The military team that killed Osama Bin Laden is an elite special forces group unofficially called Seal Team 6.

Officially, the team's name is classified and not available to the public, technically there is no team 6. A Tier-One counter-terrorism force similar to the Army's elusive Delta group, Team 6's mission rarely make it to paper much less the newspaper.

It shows how important the publicity about Bin Laden's killing is to the U.S. that this morning, Team 6 is front pages news.

The members of Team 6 are all "black" operatives. They exist outside military protocol, engage in operations that are at the highest level of classification and often outside the boundaries of international law. To maintain plausible deniability in case they are caught, records of black operations are rarely, if ever, kept.

The development of SEAL Team 6 was in direct response to the 1980 attempt to rescue the American hostages held in Iran. The mission was a terrific failure that fell apart at many points and illustrated the need for a dedicated counter-terrorist team capable of operating with the utmost secrecy.

The Team was labeled 6 at the time to confuse Soviet intelligence about the number of SEAL teams in operation at the time. There were only two others.

Team 6 poached the top operatives from other SEAL units and trained them even more intensely from there. Even among proven SEAL's the attrition rate for Team 6 is reported to be nearly half.

There are no names available for current Team 6 members, but the CIA does recruit heavily from their numbers for their Special Operations Group, so it makes sense that they were chosen to work with the CIA on this mission.

Team 6 is normally devoted to missions with maritime authority: ship rescues, oil rigs, naval bases or land bases accessible by water. There are no waterways near Bin Laden's compound.

When a former Navy SEAL was called for a comment about this article all he could say was: "You know I'd love to help you man, but I can't say a word about Team 6. There is no Team 6."

Until they produce graphic pictures of Osama's cadaver or show the results of DNA testing, I'm inclined to believe that former Chicago Bulls Scottie Pippen
was murdered and used as a stand-in for Bin Laden. They do have a remarkable resemblance and come to think of it, has anyone seen or heard from Scottie lately?

US refuses to rule out Pakistan backing for Bin Laden

WASHINGTON—US counter-terrorism chief John Brennan refused to rule out official Pakistani backing for Osama bin Laden on Monday and said Islamabad was only told of the raid that killed the Al-Qaeda leader after US forces had left Pakistani airspace.

"We are looking right now at how he was able to hold out there for so long and whether or not there was any type of support system within Pakistan that allowed him to stay there," Brennan told a White House briefing.

Pressed for a second time by journalists on whether the United States believed the Pakistani government when it said it didn't know where bin Laden was, the top official replied: "We are pursuing all leads on this issue.

"We will pursue all leads to find out exactly what type of support system and benefactors that bin Laden would have had," he said.

"It is inconceivable that bin Laden did not have a support system in the country to allow him to stay there for an extended period of time," he added.

"I won't speculate on what type of support he would have had on an official basis, and we are talking to the Pakistanis right now."

Pakistan has been a key ally of the United States in the war on terror. But Islamabad has been often criticized for not doing enough to combat Islamic radicalism.

The United States has maintained multi-billion-dollar packages in defense and civilian aid designed to help Pakistan fight extremism and assist the war in Afghanistan.

Pakistan's powerful military intelligence services have been accused by US officials of covertly supporting Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked networks fighting American troops in Afghanistan.

Since 2002, Pakistan has pressed numerous offensives against home-grown Taliban holed up in its northwest where more than 2,000 soldiers have died.

The Taliban is a creation of the Pakistani Intellegence Service. They used it to take advantage of the chaos after the withdrawal of the Soviet Army from Afghanistan and the in fighting among the mujahadeens. Tapos magtataka si Uncle Sam saan yung loyalties nila...

U.S. commandos knew bin Laden likely would die
    By Mark Hosenball
    Mon May 2, 2011 1:10pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. special forces set out to kill Osama bin Laden and dump his body in the sea to make it harder for the al Qaeda founder to become a martyr, U.S. national security officials told Reuters on Monday.

"This was a kill operation," one of the officials said.

"If he had waved a white flag of surrender, he would have been taken alive," the official added. But the operating assumption among the U.S. raiders was that bin Laden would put up a fight -- which he did.

Bin Laden "participated" in a firefight between the U.S. commandos and residents of the fortified mansion near the Pakistani capital Islamabad where he had been hiding, the official said.

The official would not explicitly say whether bin Laden fired on the Americans, but confirmed that during the course of the 40-minute operation the U.S. team shot bin Laden in the head.

Three other men and a woman, who U.S. officials said was used as a human shield, lay dead after the raid, but no Americans were killed.

A senior Obama administration official said the commandos knew that bin Laden probably would be killed rather than captured.

"U.S. forces are never in a position to kill if there is a way to accept surrender consistent with the ROE (rules of engagement). That said, I think there was broad recognition that it was likely to end in a kill," the administration official said.

The operation was carried out by a team of about 15 special forces operatives -- most, if not all, U.S. Navy Seals, according to U.S. officials familiar with the details. They indicated the team was based in Afghanistan.

One official said it included forensic specialists whose job was to collect evidence proving that bin Laden was caught in the raid and intelligence that might be useful in tracking down other al Qaeda leaders or foiling ongoing plots.

It was done so that bin Laden's dead body would not become a symbol of veneration or inspiration for would-be militants, U.S. officials said.

"You wouldn't want to leave him so that his body could become a shrine," one of the officials said.

Does anyone remember the commando raid via satellite scene in "Patriot Games"? They even backdated the satellite imagery to reconstruct the layout of the building during construction phase, amazing!

    How satellites helped get Osama

    Google / DigitalGlobe / GeoEye

This Google Earth image shows Osama bin Laden's triangular compound toward the left side of the frame.

The climax of the Osama drama took place on the ground in Pakistan, but the gutsy military operation would have been impossible to pull off without a web of orbiting satellites.

The proof of that emerged today in accounts of the plan to get Osama bin Laden: Once the CIA and the U.S. military focused in on bin Laden's potential hideout in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, views from above could be turned into a detailed map of the premises, most likely with the help of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The map was so detailed that the operation's planners could build a mockup of the compound for rehearsals.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The outer features of the compound were studied intensively," John Brennan, the White House's deputy national security adviser for homeland security and counterterrorism, told journalists today.

The Pentagon can draw upon a constellation of military satellites for imagery in a variety of wavelengths, but it also picks up pictures from commercial satellite companies such as GeoEye and DigitalGlobe — the same companies that provide mapping data for websites such as Google Earth. A series of satellite pictures can be used to trace the history of the building site from an empty lot in 2001, to a newly built mansion in 2005, to an even more built-out neighborhood this January. Here's that latest image from DigitalGlobe:

    DigitalGlobe via Space.com

An image from DigitalGlobe highlights Osama bin Laden's compound as it appeared on Jan. 15.

An image released by the CIA shows the compound where Osama bin Laden was living, before its construction in 2004, left, and after its construction, in 2011.

Tracking down the precise location of bin Laden's base on satellite imagery occupied the attention of geo-geeks for hours, until the CIA provided the solution to the puzzle. Postings on Ogle Earth and the Google Earth blog trace every step of the hunt. This diagram from the CIA helps you identify the compound on the images above:

    CIA

A diagram from the CIA shows the layout of Osama bin Laden's compound in detail.

Once the decision was made to go ahead with the raid, another set of satellites came into play: A space-based military satellite system that provides a secure communication channel between the warfighters in the field and the experts directing the operation from far off. Even President Barack Obama could monitor the action in real time from the White House Situation Room, just as CIA Director Leon Panetta could from the spy agency's headquarters.

    Pete Souza / White House

President Barack Obama and other top U.S. government officials receive an update on the mission against Osama bin Laden in the White House Situation Room on Sunday.

The main satellite constellations involved here are the Defense Satellite Communications System, or DSCS-III and the Milstar system. Milstar is of more recent vintage and has more capability for secure communications, but it doesn't offer as much signal bandwidth as DSCS-III. The satellite system links up with communication terminals that are installed at bases on the ground, place on ships stationed offshore, or even carried around by the helicopter raiders. The Navy SEALs who took on the "get Obama" mission typically wear helmet-cams that can send a stream of encrypted video halfway around the world.

These high-tech surveillance and communication tools ultimately provided the U.S. military with a high-tech edge over Osama bin Laden and his supporters, who had to go low-tech to avoid detection. And ironically, it was that very low-techiness that tipped off the CIA: The fact that a million-dollar mansion had no phone lines or Internet links led analysts to suspect that they had the right target in their sights.

i don't quite get the rationale for dumping the body on the ocean though...

i hope they will soon put forward more solid proof that it was obl that was killed.

until then, i can see another series of detective tv shows within the lines of "myth busters: is obl really dead or not?", "unsolved mysteries: death of obl", "cold case file: obl", etc.

conspiracy theory: The US is probably keeping Osama's body with them. The body will never ever see the light of the day.

Think about it. All these years hunting Osama down. Then they finally kill and they would just dump it in the sea? They probably still need the body for further authentication and its probably something that cannot be done exhaustively on a crowded chopper ride back home? Did the US mention which sea they dumped him? I dont know the geography there but isnt Afghanistan is land locked and did the US team pass by any body of water? They are just saying they buried him in the sea to appease Muslim customs and to prevent Osama's remain from becoming a shrine.

Osama Bin Laden: What happened to his body?

US officials say Osama Bin Laden's body was treated with respect and buried at sea, but some Muslims argue there was no good reason for not burying it on land.

Islamic tradition requires the dead to be buried as soon as possible, unless an autopsy is required.

The US military took this requirement very seriously, burying the body within hours.

"Traditional procedures for Islamic burial were followed," an official said.

Religious rites were carried out on the deck of a US aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson. The body, shrouded in a white sheet and placed in a weighted bag, was then placed on a flat board, tipped up, and eased into the Arabian Sea.

This occurred at 0600GMT, approximately 12 hours after the firefight during which Osama Bin Laden was shot in the head.

After this first shot, reports ABC News' The Blotter, he was shot again, to make sure that he was dead.

‬The body was then flown to Afghanistan and Bin Laden's identity was confirmed. Officials say a DNA sample was taken that matched that of several other family members. Some sources say facial recognition technology was also used.

From Afghanistan, the body was, it appears, flown to the USS Carl Vinson.

"A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker," a US defence official said.

    Why at sea?

According to UK-based Imam Dr Abduljalil Sajid, Chairman of the Muslim Council for Religious & Racial Harmony, four key steps need to be followed:

    Washing
    Shrouding in white cloth
    Ritual prayer
    Burial
There is no necessity for an imam to be present, he says, but the procedures should be carried out by Muslims at least one of whom "knows the minimum basic Muslim law of burial".

Whether any such person was present is impossible to know, he says, based on the limited information provided. But he also questions whether sea burial was appropriate in this case.

It is correct to carry out a burial at sea when someone dies on a sea journey, he says, but in this case there was no sound reason for it.

The US authorities could surely have found someone - a member of the extensive Bin Laden family, or even one of the many supporters of his "evil" ideology - who would have been prepared to give the body a proper burial, he argues.

His words were echoed by Mohammed Qudah, a professor of Islamic law at the University of Jordan, who told the Associated Press news agency that burying Bin Laden at sea was not forbidden if there was nobody to receive the body and provide a Muslim burial.

But he went on: "It's neither true nor correct to claim that there was nobody in the Muslim world ready to receive Bin Laden's body."

The agency also quoted Dubai's grand mufti Mohammed al-Qubaisi, saying that sea burials were permissible only in extraordinary circumstances, adding: "This is not one of them."

"If the family does not want him, it's really simple in Islam: You dig up a grave anywhere, even on a remote island, you say the prayers and that's it," he said.

    No location

US officials have given two reasons why a sea burial was chosen. First, that they did not want his grave to become a shrine. Second, that there was no time to negotiate with other countries to arrange a possible burial on land.

According to CBS News, Saudi Arabia refused to take the body. If correct, this suggests that an offer was made - and that had Saudi Arabia accepted the body, there would have been a grave, which could in theory have become a shrine.

However, ABC's Jonathan Karl, writing before the burial was confirmed, painted a different picture:

"US officials tell me the last thing they want is for his burial place to become a terrorist shrine.

"To avoid that, an informed source tells me, the intention is the bury his body at sea - leaving no definitive location for the final resting place of his body."
