U.S. issues travel warnings, puts diplomatic facilities on high alert

(CNN) -- The United States put American diplomatic facilities around the world on high alert and issued a global travel warning for Americans as President Barack Obama announced that terrorist leader Osama bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan.

A senior U.S. official told CNN that all U.S. diplomatic facilities around the world are on high alert.

"Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations," the State Department said in a worldwide travel warning issued early Monday. "U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times."

The range of precautions comes as the United States braces for a potential retaliatory attack in the aftermath of bin Laden's death at the hands of U.S. special forces.

Adding to the concern is a Defense Department report released last week by the WikiLeaks website that a Guantanamo detainee had knowledge of al Qaeda possibly possessing a nuclear bomb somewhere in Europe.

The detainee, Abu al-Libi, said he was told by al Qaeda associate Sharif al-Masri that he believed if bin Laden were captured or killed "the bomb would be detonated" in the United States.

Al-Libi said al-Masri told him during the summer of 2004 that the terrorist network was having difficulty moving the bomb, but if it could move it "al Qaeda would find operatives to use it."

Helicopter crashes in Abbottabad

ABBOTABAD: A helicopter crashed in Abbottabad near the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul late on Sunday night, police sources said.

The chopper was seen flying low before it crashed, locals said. The sound of gunfire and two small blasts was heard before a massive explosion, sources said.

They added that the third blast damaged windowpanes of the area houses. This was stated to be the first incident of its kind in Abbottabad at night.

The sources said the helicopter fell down in a plot in Sikandarbad, a populated area of the city, spreading panic through the neighbourhood.

The sound of the explosion was heard as far afield as 10 kilometres, the sources added.

Washington: Apparently fearing a leak, the US did not inform Pakistan about the closely guarded operation on the outskirts of Islamabad today that resulted in the death of al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden, a senior administration official said.

"The information was not shared with any other country including Pakistan," the official said, adding that in such a kind of operation, the information is kept only to a few people and this was done in this case too.

The official told White House correspondents that the successful 40-minute operation was carried out by two US helicopters.

Besides, Osama bin Laden, three men and one woman were killed in this operation.

One helicopter was damaged due to mechanical failure, but no US special forces were injured or hurt in this operation.

Announcing the death of bin Laden, President Barack Obama asked Pakistan to co-operate with the US in the war against terror.

"Going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates," Obama said in his live televised speech.

"Over the years, I've repeatedly made clear that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was. That is what we've done. But it's important to note that our counter-terrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding. Indeed, bin Laden had declared war against Pakistan as well, and ordered attacks against the Pakistani people, Obama said.

"I called President Zardari, and my team has also spoken with their Pakistani counterpart. They agree that this is a good and historic day for both of our nations.

"And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates," said the US President.

Osama bin Laden was killed in a US operation in Abbottabad.

A senior administration official said they would investigate as to how Osama was living so close to Pakistan's Capital that too in a neighbourhood which was normally a residence of top retired military officials.

On Sunday a team of US forces undertook the operation in Abbottabad, 100km (62 miles) north-east of Islamabad.

After a "firefight" Bin Laden was killed and his body taken by US forces, the president said.

Mr Obama said "no Americans were harmed".

Giving more details of the operation, a senior US official said a small US team had conducted the operation in about 40 minutes.

[Updated, 2:31 a.m. ET] U.S. officials said they used facial imaging and other methods to identify the body of Osama bin Laden.

One official said it was clear to the assault force that the body matched bin Laden's description, but they used "facial recognition work, amongst other things, to confirm the identity."

A senior national security official said that they had multiple confirmations that the body was bin Laden, saying they had the "ability to run images of the body and the face."

The national security official would not confirm if DNA testing was performed.
