Thanks. The buildings are still the same now. I can recognize it.

Avenida was the Ayala back in the days. The place to be. Most of the theatre houses are located there or near Avenida. (Of course we also all know malls killed cinema houses)

Bukod sa killing traffic under LRT particularly dun nga sa Avenida, the place became gloomy and dark.

Remember the intersection of Katipunan and Boni Serrano? Busy area yun dati with Shakeys ata. Nung na tayo yung underpass, namatay yung lugar.

it was clean in the 60s.
by the early 70s, it was like present-day geylang, only with wider congested sidewalks. and the calesas' horse droppings didn't generate positive appeal, either.
no. it was not beautiful by then. the lrt just made it darker. it could have become more beautiful with the lrt, except that we chose to side with the sidewalk vendors.

Natuwa ako when then Mayor Lito Atienza made Avenida closed to vehicles. Walkable.

Billy Joel said it in a song.

"You can get just so much
    From a good thing

    You can linger too long
    In your dreams

    Say goodbye to the
    Oldies but goodies

‘Cause the good ole days weren’t always good
And tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems
    "

Lived in west side of manila for a good amount of 15 years. During the first years, maganda nga. Pero as it progress, di na sya "walkable". My main gripe on that ruling is the traffic on the side streets where jeep are diverted to.

But then, lrt really ruined it.

I like what he did on the bay area though.

Agree di ko masabing maganda pa siya at that time. I only frequent the area kasi dyan ako namimili ng electronic goods and parts sa Raon. Ang sidewalk di nauubusan ng vendors, be it yung mga Dymo sellers, 2nd hand books, comics and magazines, tools, etc. Recto) at Good Earth Emporium.

once, my wife's lola made lambing to me. she was quite sick that moment, quipped;,,,, "_ _ _ _ , can you drive me to avenida paglakas ko? huh? ano po gagawin natin doon?
lola, ask anything/anywhere around here in manila wag lang sa avenida, para nyo nang awa,,,!
found out that avenida used to be their pasyalan, sort of our malls today daw pala.

i used to ply along recto/divisoria during atienza, lim & erap's term. e saan ko kaya isasaksak ang auto ko sa avenida nung panahon na nagyaya si lola?
