Views from the front-line (somewhat anyway)

N Korea has a very profitable hostage situation with the South. The people in the south will NEVER move against the North. (short of an attack by the north of course) They have brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, moms and dads and grandparents there. And they are at the mercy of the obviously power-mad kimjongil. Not wanting family members to starve, the south sends an obscene amount of aid to the north, essentially becoming the north's milking cow.

Enter the previous president Kim, he implements his so-called Sunshine Policy for fostering communication between the nations-for an eventual reunification. He even wins the 2000 nobel peace prize for "for his work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and in East Asia in general, and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular". In reality, he is just kimjongil's b*tch, caving in to all demands and sending a lot of CASH aid instead of goods. Majority of the funding for the nuke research came from his 'aid'.

Present regime, still the same. President Roh is afraid of the North and is still sending a lot of aid money. Estimates peg it at USD$4-10 billion per year.
North tests its nukes, the whole world is wary.. what does president Roh say? He tells people to go on with their lives as if nothing happened. The people here(majority of them anyway), afraid to beleive the possibility of armed conflict with their brothers, follow his advise and play it cool.

Suspected second nuclear test site found and the former president kim goes on to say in a speech that the south should not change his sunshine policy, that they should continue to foster relations with the madman. Can you say lapdog?

I wonder if a Nobel Peace Prize can be withdrawn?

bakit lahat sila Kim ang pangalan?

btw, you don't need a sophisticated military to use a nuke effectively, and there are many different low-tech delivery systems. as close as N Korea is to China and Japan, they can use the relatively cheap and available Scud-type launcher, artillery shells, put it in a bomb that any airplane that can fly to its destination...the possibilities are endless. you can't stop every bomber in the air from reaching its destination, and how do you shoot down an artillery shell?

if Kim wanted to strike the US, he doesn't need ICBM's. if he can get it past border security (which is unfortunately not too hard to do), he can load the damn thing in a DHL truck and park it in NY or LA.

this is why we are scared. :nerves:

with the first nuclear test.. the world is in synch in penalizing nokors with economic sanctions.. from the way things are hatching the 2nd nuclear test seems inevitable... will military strike then prevent possible 3rd nuclear test...

On a more positive development, Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe has ended all debate on the possibility of Japan's nuclear armament. He stated that the country will not deviate from its postwar policy that bans the development, possession and use of nuclear weapons.
