Thousands of EDSA commuters were affected Thursday afternoon when the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) temporarily stopped its operations due to insufficient power supplies.

Laysa Blancaflor, MRT's public information officer, said operations were stopped at 2:15 p.m. as the power supplies in all their stations have been affected by Wednesday night's shutdown of a power transformer belonging to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in Taytay, Rizal.

"Wala po kaming exact time kung kelan magre-resume (We don't know what time our operations will resume)," Blancaflor said.

MRT line-3, the nation’s biggest overhead railway with 13 stations, stretches from Taft Avenue in Pasay City to North Avenue in Quezon City.

The shutdown, which was caused by an explosion, had affected the cities of Marikina, Pasig, San Juan, and parts of Quezon City in Metro Manila, and the towns of Binangonan, Taytay, Angono, Cainta and Antipolo in Rizal province.

Meralco's Dina Lomotan could not say how long the power outage would last but assured that they are working to restore the power immediately.

Joe Zaldirriaga, Meralco external communications manager, on Thursday morning said at least four of their circuits still have no power.

Areas still affected should expect rotating brownouts, he said. - GMANews.TV
