Other way around. I got recruited by Top Gear because of my writing. I've been writing independently for several years, already.
Gained knowledge through joining auto clubs (including Nissanbayan, Protegetech, FordClubPhilippines and the now-crappy NissanForums), hanging around shops, drag-meets, modifiers and modifying and wrecking my own vehicles. I used to log about 2,000 - 3,000 kilometers a month for work, as well.
You learn a lot about road safety and emergency maintenance when you drive that much.![]()

Got lucky. On NissanForums, we got to hang around and chat with Mike Kojima. He was THE Mr. Nissan of the time. Tech editor at Sport Compact Car and unrivalled guru in terms of SR20 power and modification. A very knowledgeable guy.
