I'm not sure if you've been following this news for some time now but just like to share new developments about this case.

Both parents now suspects in Madeleine's disappearance
Link:http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe...ann/index.html

PORTIMAO, Portugal (CNN) -- Portuguese police formally named Gerry McCann a suspect in the disappearance of his daughter, Madeleine, 4, a lawyer for the McCann family said late Friday after McCann was questioned for several hours.
Earlier in the day, the girl's mother, Kate McCann, was also named a suspect, a family spokeswoman said.

The parents have denied any involvement in the girl's disappearance. They have not been charged, and there was no immediate confirmation from the Portuguese police that they were now considered suspects.

Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, just days before her fourth birthday, while the family was on vacation in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz. Her plight drew international attention.
Also on Friday, a relative of the family said police want Kate McCann to "confess" to having accidentally killed Madeleine.

Philomena McCann, the sister of Madeleine's father, Gerry, told the British news network ITN that police "tried to get Kate to confess to having accidentally killed Madeleine by offering her a deal through her lawyer" in which she would say she killed Madeleine by accident "and then disposed of the body."

The girl's aunt -- who spoke from Inverness, Scotland -- said that the allegation is "ludicrous," according to news agencies. The police told Kate McCann that in exchange for a guilty plea, "we can guarantee you a two-year jail sentence or even less. You may get off because people feel sorry for you, it was an accident," Philomena McCann said.

There was no immediate confirmation from Portuguese police. Kate and Gerry McCann have previously denied any wrongdoing. Police on Friday named Kate McCann a suspect in the girl's disappearance and said the girl's blood was found in a vehicle the family rented 25 days after reporting her disappearance, according to a family spokeswoman.

John McCann, Gerry's brother, asked why authorities are only now telling the family about finding Madeleine's blood in the car. He called on police to share what information they have. He told CNN he hopes "we can move on and get Gerry and Kate exonerated and get back to the focus of where the investigation should be." A representative for Kate McCann told CNN that police have not brought charges against her.

Kate McCann was seen entering police headquarters in Portimao, a town in Portugal's Algarve region, Friday morning. She was released after more than five hours. Gerry McCann followed later and was being questioned as a witness, a family representative said.

Portugese Law

• Formal suspect called "arguido," or "arguida" for a woman
• An "arguido" has more legal rights than a witness, including right to remain silent and have a lawyer
• Some people request to be declared "arguido" to get this protection
•Police must declare a witness an "arguido" before asking certain questions or making an arrest
• Courts may restrict movements of an "arguido"
• An arrest or charge does not always follow someone being named an "arguido"
"The suggestion that Kate is involved in Madeleine's disappearance is ludicrous," Gerry McCann wrote on his blog Thursday. "Anyone who knows anything about the 3rd May knows that Kate is completely innocent. We will fight this all the way and we will not stop looking for Madeleine."

Kate McCann was also questioned for almost 11 hours the day before, and left looking shaken and drained, according to CNN's Paula Hancocks. The McCanns "continue to deny absolutelythey had anything to do" with their daughter's disappearance, family friend Clarence Mitchell told The Associated Press. Portuguese authorities made no public statement on the latest developments.

As a formal suspect under Portuguese law, Kate McCann will gain more legal protection than when she was questioned as a witness. She will be able to remain silent during questioning and to have legal representation. Those involved in criminal investigations in Portugal can ask to be declared formal suspects to receive this protection, although it is unclear whether Mrs. McCann asked to do this.
Madelein was reported missing on May 3, days before her 4th birthday. Her parents told police she was abducted from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while they ate a meal at a nearby restaurant.

Madeleine's parents, who are both doctors from Leicestershire in central England, have campaigned internationally to secure the safe return of their daughter, including having a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and securing support from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and soccer star David Beckham.
Until now, police have insisted Madeleine's parents were not suspects and were being questioned as witnesses.

Only one person has previously been named as a formal suspect: British national Robert Murat, who has denied any involvement in the case.

parati kung napapanood ang news na ito CNN man o BBC. Sa ngayon eh naka alis na nang Portugal ang mag asawang Kate and Gerry McCann pabalik nang UK. They are formal suspect sa pagkawala nang kanilang anak as per Portugal Police.
